I always found when hunting thick brushy wood and you know you wont be shooting over a 100 metres, this caliber is one of the most effective to anchor a deer, many have fallen to my's 44 Mag and that stumping sound when you hit your target in the boiler romm is quite reassuring as you know it wont go very far, for me the 44mag is the deer hunting i go to, here is a few that have credentials... I've shot deer (years ago) with a 44 magnum. It works quite well actually. I'd pick one up again if the right one came along.
Using 38-55's right now , which are kinda similar when they hit. Axe into a big stump sound...whack! Surprising how well they work when I do my part ( hit them where I'm supposed to...).
Nice rifles BTW.

All of my 44 mag perform very good with 270 gr Speer and Littl'e Gun, especially in the 77-44 it is a moa load, the bolt action improve accuracy drasticly... JP.

This is a target of my 77-44 at a 100 metres, at a 100 yards it is at 1.1 inch after a 100 yards this caliber open fast so that why i put the emphasis at shots within a 110 yards... JP.

Without a scope a 77/44 is almost as short as a 10/22 and only about a pound heavier. Ideal bush gun. What are you using for loads?
correction it actually only weighs a couple of ounces more then the 10/22! its amazingly lights. when i first picked mine up i was really supprised! and it doesnt kick very much!

Well the 44-40 has been dropping game for over a century ,why wouldn't the .44 mag be even better?A lot of people have been after Marlin[before the Rem mess] to change the rifling twist from 1-38" to 1-20" to handle heavier bullets but no luck so far.......Harold

Yup! Certainly a nice buck. So what load and at what distance friend??

Inquiring minds want to know.

That one was shot @ a mean 18 yards...But i have shot a couple others around 50.. I'm with Caramel on this one, don't push it past 100 yards..Which is why i used a red dot. I now have an XS Ghost ring on it. I don't reload. So this one was 240 gr SP I think it was Remington, and was unhappy with the penetration. So i switched to Winchester supreme 240 gr Hollow points, made a big difference. As for the kill location. Outside of Denbigh Ontario

WOW......I totally screwed up there. I looked at whitetailwoodsarcher's location by mistake!

ddddoooohhhh!

Edit: I guess the WT deer near Renfrew County are doing fine by the looks of yours. Thank you for the good picture!

Works great on bear too. A lot of people argue dead is dead but when your hunting some nasty thick bush a anchor is nice to have!! I use a 16" puma.

I've taken quite a few deer with a Ruger 44...
The lead for running deer takes some getting use to...On a running deer target, at 50yds POI was about 3-4'' from where I aimed...I did alot of practicing with a 22 mag, as it was pretty much identical...Judging yardage/lead beyond 50 is crucial on moving deer....
