I have a five inch S&W model 29 classic and large doses of 296 in a short barrel will cut down the amount of shooting "fun".
Below is a Quickload chart showing 231 being 95% burnt at just below 2.6 inches and 100% burnt at 4.2 inches at over 950 fps. The Speer #14 manual has good loading data for short barreled handguns and taming the .44 magnum. I would save the max loads for shooting a Tyrannosaurus Rex or Mastodons and remember to wear hearing protection so you won't hear these large animals scream in pain when hit.
