.44 Mag Revolvers?

As soon as I get my restricted PAL, which should be very soon, I want to get a revolver in .44 Mag, mostly as a carry gun when I go camping and hiking up north, and pretty much just to shoot it as well :)

Since I won't be using it to hunt anything with, it won't be the main purpose for it at least, I want a shorter barrel, and it to be double action. I was looking at Smith & Wesson Model 629 Mountain Gun, Taurus Tracker Model 44, or a Ruger Redhawk Double Action.

If anyone has any input on these revolvers, or any other revolvers to recommend to me, I'd appreciate it.
 
ruger just came out with a 4.2 redhawk- those things were selling like hotcakes- i've got the 5.5 and i love it-
 
In Canada you may only possess your hand gun in your home or at the range. No camping allowed.

Maybe if you had a time machine and went back 30years you could do it. Unfortunately, too many people voted liberal over that time and now the whole country is upside down including the gun laws.

You do realize that you will need to get a special - and very difficult to obtain - permit to carry? (Your RPAL won't do.) I believe you have to be a licenced prospector or guide. A few CGN members have them, "Camp Cook" for one.

Unfortunately, the 629 Mountain Gun is not available here due to having a prohibited barrel length. That said, I would choose a S&W as they have the best triggers, particularly in double action, have good warranty/parts service, and are the best-looking and best balanced.

I would choose the Ruger if I was going to shoot lots of heavy bullet loads (more than the standard 240-250 grain), but their triggers can't be made as smooth and they are quite bulky compared to the S&W.

Stay away from the Taurus. You are more likely to get a lemon and there is no warranty/parts service in Canada (unless this has changed since Freedom Ventures has started carrying the line). They also typically have mediocre triggers.

I should also clarify a little more; I am currently looking for a job up north as a ranger and am looking to buy some land up there, so that would make it legal for me to carry on my property. I'm hoping I'd also be able to carry it with my job (if I can ever find one), but I think I'll definitely need to jump through some government hoops for that.

Maybe I will just get a trapper's licence and become a trapper :)

You're not allowed to carry it on you property either. Has to be in your house or at the range.

A very cool idea is to have a range set up and certified on your property.

I was under the impression you could. Maybe I'm confusing the US laws and our Canadian ones.

And that is a cool idea.

I am starting to think your stay here is going to be a short one.

If you don't like the laws work towards getting them changed. Just ignoring them because you don't like them will get your ass in a sling every time.
