The Model 29 is the .44 Magnum most like a Model 19, other than of course being built on the large N Frame rather than the medium K frame. A K Frame is simply too small to accommodate .44 sized cartridges. There have been some .44 Special gun built on the same L Frame as the 586/686, but the cylinder diameter only provides enough space for five chanbers.

I have four S&W 44 mags, 3 29's and 1 629. They are a size bigger version of the 19 (have a couple of those too). - dan

Ruger makes some very nice revolvers ...my personal fav. in a big bore is the redhawk ,as far as loads go the .44 has a GREAT spread my wife loves my load of 6.5 gr. of 231 with a 200 gr. cast bullet. This is a cheap load to shoot and you can shoot it all day....from there you can go all the way up to HOLY _ _ _ _ !! I dont have any prob. with smith but take a look at the ruger before you buy.

Are you saying that they didn't use .41s?
Yes, the thread on the S&W site goes into detail over which guns were used in which movies, including interviews with the firearms prop master. Sorry, no 41's. - dan
Huih, well that rumor has sure gotten around then.
I actually owned one just like that! Well almost, mine had the factory Hogue round butt rubber grips... Sold it in '91 or '92.... Dumbest thing I ever did. I still regret selling it to this day...

Is that some sort of recoil damper in the forward portion of the lug?
I don't normally like full lugged barrels but that one really does it for me. I'd give up a body part to get one of those.....
Someone said that shooting .44Mag almost forces you into reloading. It SEEMS from my short time shooting that the bigger the caliber the more versatility and varying experience can be had by reloading from mild to wild. Once I get a mold for making my own .500 bullets I'm hoping to explore the less than shoulder bruising performance of my short barrel TC Encore rifle. I also expect that I'll trip over a deal on a .44Mag or possibly a .454 Casull revolver in the next year and go for it. The idea being to play with a variety of loads for grins and giggles.
