Hey guys,

okay, so there is the ruger .44 magnum deerfield (haha corrected) rifle,
then there is the desert eagle mark Vii .44 magnum pistol

could you modify the rifle legally so that the rifle takes the handgun magazine?

This sounds like fun.

Is the ruger a semi auto?
Yes it's an autoloader.

The easiest way to do the modification would be to gut the current rotary mag, modify it and permanently attach it to the Desert Eagle mag. This would then be considered a mag purposely designed for the Ruger and would have to be pinned to five rounds so you only end up with one extra round over the original mag.

You could come up with some form of magwell that would attach to the rifle that would take the unaltered Desert Eagle mag but it would take a little bit of design work to get it to feed properly. Any modifications that you make to the Desert Eagle mag that cause it to not function in the pistol any more, means that that mag is now specifically designed for the Ruger and again is required to be pinned.
In the long run it's not really worth it.
