There was my Dan Wesson 4" 44 magnum, probably the biggest Prohib in the World, minding its own business and taking up more than its share of space in the gun safe. I had never taken off the barrel before, so in went the wrench and in no time the barrel was off. Then the bad idea arrived.

I remembered the 10 1/2 inch S&W model 29 barrel I had, and wondered if the threads were compatible. What do you think?

The barrel shroud indexing pin on the Dan Wesson is in the way, but it looks like with a bit of modest fitting, and removal of that pin, the S&W model 29 barrel will work!

Should I do it? Just for a sense of how long that barrel will be ...

Should I:

1. Cut the 10 1/2" barrel to 4.25" in the spirit of keeping the Dan Wesson close to what I had?

2. Leave the 10 1/2" barrel whole and make one heck of a cannon out of this revolver?

3. Leave well enough alone, and sell the thing as a kit to someone who will make a proper Dan Wesson 4.25" inner barrel out of the 10 1/2" model 29 barrel ... and still have a 6" barrel left over!

Keep in mind that I hate the recoil anyway, and I'm not a 44 magnum guy. I keep forgetting that, this is my second 44 magnum and I have 12 rounds through this one.

What would you do?

Thanks for your input!

Can you not find DW barrels that already work?
They used to come in "kits" with 3-5 or so barrels.
Hope you find what you need!

Later....

Cut it, its just a gun

just re read your post- SELL IT- shortening the barrel is only going to make the recoil worse, and since you're "not a 44 magnum guy" get rid of it and go to the pussy- I shoot a 44 mag 5 inch redhawk myself, and i'm quite sure someone in Calgary could find a home 4 it- dabear comes to mind off the top of my head

Why bugger up a nice long barrel, assuming you are able (and have the knowledge and skill) to fit the S&W barrel to the Wesson? Also keep in mind that if the Wesson is your only 12(6), you lose your grandfather status if you alter it to restricted

cheers mooncoon

Thank you all, Gentlemen! Less than 12 hours and I hear most of you telling me to get the right barrel, which I will try to do.

It did feel awfully nice, quite balanced, with the 10 1/2" barrel on it. Less mass, more recoil, got it! But this thing weighs about 3 pounds with no barrel at all, a few ounces one way or another won't make much difference. It's even "ported", and still quite horrible.

No worries about running out of Prohibs, but thanks again for the thought!

If the 4.25" Dan Wesson barrel works out, I'll post the details here. If not, you'll see this big bad boy on the EE, it will probably be the cheapest prohib-per-pound anyone has ever seen.

Are Dan Wesson thread (pitch etc...) the same as the Smith and Wesson for the same caliber. Thinking about it, it would make sense if they using standard taps and dies....hmm

I remember years ago seeing a Dan Wesson .44 with a 4.25" barrel made using a cut down longer barrel, the original 4" shroud and an extended barrel nut, it didn't look too bad.

If you do decide to sell, I would love first chance at this. I already own a Dan Wesson 44 in a 10inch configuration, and that thing is a tack driver.
So if the time comes, let me know. In the interm, best of luck finding a barrel.
