44 Rem Mag lite loads

Lite loads for the .44 Mag

I loaded up 100 rounds of lite loads using 240 gr lead SWC bullets for my recently acquired S&W Model 29 .44 Mag wheelgun today.

50 using 11.5 gr of [obsolete] Win 630 ball powder for ~ 900 fps.

50 using 6.5 gr of old [but still good] Unique for ~ 850 fps.

Used data from a copy of the Speer #10 loading manual that I picked up at a gunshow some time back as it showed loads for the Win 630 powder that I happen to have a couple pounds of.

Bonus was finding a crisp US $5 bill tucked into the pages of the old Speer manual... :cool:

I subsequently loaded up another 20 rounds using the same bullet & using an equivalent powder to 700X. Using the load data from my lucky Speer manual above I put 6.0 gr of powder in each case for a rated velocity of ~ 900 fps.

I tried out the above loads this afternoon in my "new to me" vintage S&W Model 29 with 6 1/2" barrel. All loads were very nice to shoot & very accurate.

I would use any of the above again for "lite" target loads for the .44 Magnum.

With snail mail back on, the 240gr SWC cast I ordered arrived today. With .44 Spl cowboy loads with their low report in mind, I picked up Unique & Bullseye to build our own reduced loads as wife & I both enjoy shooting my S&W 629 :)
