Just got a Ruger 77/44 bolt action rifle.

Will be shooting 240 gr JSP using H-110.

- Hornady has 24.8 gr H-110 as max load
- Sierra has 24.0 gr H-110 max load
- The Hodgdon website reloading data also says 24.0 gr H-110 max load.

Just want to get an idea if anybody has exceeded the recommended max loads, in particular the 24.8 gr H-110. Has anybody pushed it 25.0 gr H-110?

Why do you want to exceed the max load? It is MAX because it is MAX! Do you think the extra 0.2gr is going to give you any benefit? If you want more power get a 444 rifle!

In the pressure range that H-110 runs in, you don't want to #### around. Too light = bad. Too heavy = very bad.

Hodgdon makes the powder, I'd go with what they say is max.

Start light and work your way up and watch for pressure signs.

With H-110 you have to be careful about that. I believe Hodgdon says not to load down more than 3% below the max load. I don't usually load to max in most calibers anyway because the gain at the top is so marginal but case life suffers, so if I was loading for the bullet mentioned I would just load 23.5 grains and see how it shoots.

You're right, I should of said to start at the starting recommended load and work your way up.

I can shoot 1" at 100 yards. I prefer IMR4227 in mine. Less kick and higher accuracy from my 77/44 IMHO. Velocity is lower than is H110 but maybe the slower burn is more consistent. I have also played with 2400 a fair bit but traded away what was left of that half pound.

For what it's worth I also shoot 310gr cast. They are the ticket for hunting. Learn from my mistake and please don't ever shoot anything with a 240 hp. It makes such a mess.
