I know a 4 gr unique load with a 200 Gr lead bullet is a pretty tame load id not want to load much less than that.
Theres alot of modern guns blowin up with low power smokeless loads they call it detonation or something like that.
look it up on the net before you load down to much the top straps have been busted clean thru on SAA colts which are strong guns with to light a load of smokeless.
This is good info, thanks for the warning mark. I was always under the impression that this wasn't an issue in straight walled cartridges, guess I was wrong.
Anything less than 500 fps and it is no longer considered a firearm, ooops that was for pellet guns
Are you thinking what the minimum velocity could be and still be accurate???
that applies to firearms also doesn't it? unless of course something changed that should make the .41 rimfire derringer a non gun at 425 fps.

Theres some info on the net about this it happens in any case type and the damage i seen was bad cylinder blowin apart top strap strait up in the air turned me right off light or to light a loads.
I prefer a good charge in the 44 russian myself of 5 grs of unique.
Tho i shoot 4.5 in the S&W DAs all the time with no signs of excess presure.
The same guns handle the winchester cowboy factory ammo in 44 Sp which is loaded to 730 Fps or so.
No i wont ever try to light a load below recomended loads in the books it has something to do with the extra air space and the powder.
I dont claim to understand it but im smart enough to fear it LOL
the pressure problem you are referring to is called S.E.E.or secondary explosion effect.it happens when a light charge of slow powder partially ignites, but because of a low pressure generated.pauses, drops pressure to nearly zero, and then ignites.where the trouble begins is when the the powder first ignites, the bullet is started into the rifling as well as the unburned powder stacked up behind it causing a bore obstruction. this wasnt fully understood untill the transducer was used and pressure curves could be graphed.SEE is difficult to produce at will even under lab conditions.i think slow ball powders in large cases were the worst, but even stick powders have caused this.55 gr of 4350 should be about 80% load density, maybe a bit less

I'm just trying to find the happy balance between "too hot" and "not fast enough"......
