.44 Semi-auto pistol

Hi guys,
I would like some help here please. I've read a fictionnal story and I think I found a chronological error in it and would like confirmation.

It is said that the fictionnal caracter was armed with a .44 Magnum semi-auto pistol. According to Wikipedia, the Desert Eagle is produce in this caliber only from 1986.

Since the story takes place in 1979, wich .44 Magnum Semi-Auto pistols were they available at the time if any?
