Hi there,

I'm looking for recommendations - I've found 44 mag for ~$200/250 but haven't find anyone with a similar (or better yet cheaper) price on 44 Special. I do plan on rolling my own but was looking for at least 1000 rounds of factory for chrony work and to build up my brass stock pile.

If someone is aware of a retailer they would suggest it would be appreciated.

44 special is one of those calibers that is almost cheaper to buy the brass and reload from the get go. Doubletap usually carries starline brass.

The 'Cowboy Action' label has driven the price crazy. Winchester 44Spl now over $60 in most locations. Much harder to find as well, but u have probably found that out already.

if you're really ambitious, get a 44 special brass , measure it, and then either run it through a trim die for 44 special or shorten it somehow- then use your load tables for 44 special- the walls may be a bit thicker, but since its a low pressure round, what do you are?

now that didn't make a whole lot of sense- sorry- after you establish the length of your 44 special, either run your 44 mag brass through a trim die for the 44 special-or just cut it to length-I have a charter arms bulldog that I have to feed that way

That's in line with the prices I've found - best so far has been in the neighborhood of $60 - $70/50 rounds. That's strange that increased demand has caused prices to rise. I would have thought it would have made the accessibility to improve and cost per round to drop.

I was hoping for bulk but if I need to reload I'll probably just buy the brass (or pick up a 686 for plinking). I have several n frames I need to feed so I'd rather not bubba that expensive magnum brass if I don't need to.

Bullet barn was selling ammo in this sort of cartridge but doesn't have any listed at the moment. Maybe still in transition to the new management.

They do have brass and bullets though.
Jetbullets should have lead also.

Do you have a firearm that specifically needs 44 special? Why not load light loads in 44 mag brass. This is my plan when I get on the reloading program

Nope, they can all run mag/special. Given the limited results of my own search and the responses here that's where my head's at. I was looking at shooting IPSC revolver this spring and while I save for my 625 I was hoping there was a "cheap" way to get more volume through my current wheelguns. In the interim I'll probably pick up some brass (since I need a 44 reloading setup for my dillon anyway) and just try and load 'em light.

I'll also check out bullet barn in the off chance they have more stock in the new year.

Good call on the bullet barn - not only are they cheaper for magnum than anywhere else I've looked but they stock 44 special and 44 Russian at roughly half the price of anyone else.

Trimming mag brass can result in case bulging when seating bullets due to case wall thickness.

Varies with the brand. Star*Line typical.

I do for the other calibers I shoot - and I agree I that I won't be burning through 500 - 1000 rounds. However I find with the dillon 650 I find it a PITA to switch from calibre to calibre so I like to load everything I can in a single session. I find I get more consistent results that way too.

For guns I don't shoot a lot, I just use the good old single stage press. In any case I can change over my 650 in less than 10 minutes, but I have a separate tool head complete for each caliber.
