was curious to find out which powders are good for the 44 special. anybody have any spectacular recipes out there?

Funny you should ask m1978, I just made up some 44 special loads & am using the following data:

Red Dot powder: 6.4 grains

Winchester or remington cases...

Primer: federal 150

Bullet: 240 grain cast lead, plain base

Preliminary findings, I was rather rushed at the range last time, and only fired 10 rounds fast SA firing. No pressure signs, casings ejected no problem no raised primers.

Got this data from the latest Sierra loading manual.
This is maximum data for 44 special, but not a big concern in my S&W 629.

My best was a 3 inch group of 4 shots at twenty yards.
I think this will prove to be a good load, in the long run.

I plan on using this load again, and will post my results for sure.

Cheers...........:)

ok, since you insist- 240 grain slug, 4.5 low end, 5 even top end for 677 low and 763 high, out of the speer 11 manual- seems kind of a pussy load, though

Unique has given me good accuracy and performance in my 'specials with 215 grain gas check and 240 grain plain base bullets. The special is much more pleasant to shoot if you keep the loads at special levels. I have loaded and shot the old "44 Mag" equivalent loads just to try them out. Went back to the milder loads--way more fun. If you want heavy loads--stay with the 44 mag.

W231 and red dot have also done well in target loads.
