Phillips screws. I had to probe around a bit in the pad to align the screwdriver with the screws. Could be some gunk in the heads. Press a bit harder. Mine were also in tight.

I hate those types of screwheads, toss them and get Robertson head screws as the lord intended. . . :D - that is instead of keeping them for resale purposes if that should ever come up. :)

Yeah, it's a phillips. Just push down really hard.
 
Just be sure and stay above 26 inches Overall Length. Also watch you don't get "Hammer Faced." I didn't find the stock was particularily long, I'd be concerned about putting sensitive facial parts much closer to the hammers, especially if it's going to see any slugs or buckshot. If you're going to the trouble anyway, maybe put a limbsaver on after you trim it down.
