444 marlin load

With which bullet? I have good results with 46gr of H4198 and Hordany 265gr FP and 42.5gr of H4198 with Hornady 300gr XTP or Speer 300gr UC.
 
I considered running the 300XTP through mine, but after some sober second thought, I decided it might not be the wisest move to run a bullet designed for impacts <1400 FPS at 2K or higher.

IMO the .429 pistol bullets have no place in the 444 unless loaded way down to handgun velocities. The only exception I might make to that is the 250 Partition or similar. The XTP's and Gold Dot bullets are not constructed for 444 use.

For the OP, what model are you shooting? In the 2 I load for I use 44.4 grains of 4198 and it shoots beautifully. These are both older microgroove 444 rifles. A friend is shooting the XLR version and has been more than happy using the LeverEvolution factory rounds - so much so it is the one rifle he owns that he has not asked me to reload for.
 
I have good results from 44.4 grains of RE-7 topped with a Hornady 265 grain FP and a magnum primer. This load works great for me @ 100 yds out of an older Marlin lever.
 
to answer your question pudel pointer its just a single shot h&r, i have some 240gr cast lead rounds i was thinking of just making cheap plinking rounds with
 
Hmmmm. Do you know what the bullets have been sized to? If .430 or .431, you may get them to run quite hot without much leading. Or, you may find leading a real problem if you push them past 1100-1200 fps. Only way to know for sure is to load some up.

I would be tempted to try Trail Boss.

I have shot moose with both the 300 XTP and the 300 grain Speer. The Speer is an incredibly tough bullet. The XTP fairs well, but will really expand at close range. I loaded mine over H335 and mag primers. Worked well in all temperatures. Can't remember the exact load. If I had a "do-all" load for the triple four, it would be the 300 grain Speer. I have seen it penetrate over 48" in game and create a fantastic wound channel.
