is it correct that you can shoot .410 shotgunshells in a 444 rifle ? if so-what is the effective range and pattern? [I'm thinking of opportunistic potting a grouse while moose hunting]

if it is viable, the 20 yard range for grouse is acceptable-unless of course you forget to replace the 444 load with the .410 shell....oh well, didn't have to clean that one

I've heard that a 444 makes a much better shotgun than rifle.

Well, my experience with the .444 Marlin is certainly different than yours... The one I had would print 100 yard, 3/4" groups all day long with a 300 grain JSP load that was doing 2150 fps. It was a deadly accurate, freakin' sledgehammer. ;)

When I owned this rifle, I didn't know about the .410 thing...I wish I had.

The 410 capability is handy when i guide and it makes for some good conversation later......one less gun, 8lbs less on the plane......all makes sense.

I'm trolling for a buddy who lurks here, short of bad mouthing his mom I can't think of a better bait than commenting on his favorite cranker. SO far not even a pm??

Personally I use 7 1/2 shot......I cant remember ever missing a grouse with it. Ive never set up a chunk of cardboard and checked patterning tho, so Im ignorant on that part.

is a .410 shotshell 44 cal or 45 cal. there is a lot of revolvers that fire 45lc and 410 shotgun yet i have a 410 single shotgun that says on it "410-44 cal" so what is it.

i can't see how firing a shotshell in a rifle would wreck rifling.

so-has anybody ''patterned'' their 444 with .410 shotshells?if you can take a grouse at 20 yards ,thats plenty acceptable.

Ican't get 410 shells to chamber in my .444 but Ijust make my own with the ,444 brass. Work great to about 20yards . Just another way my marlin keeps the freezer full.

I shot lot's of birds with shot loads in my .45-70 Handi rifle. I made shot shells out of .45-70 cases. Using a plastic shot cup in the load I found the rifle patterned as well as a regular .410 shot gun. Really 20 yards is about all you can hope for out a .410 rifled or not. If Huntinstuff says it works in the triple 4 it's gospel.

444 to 410

I went home and tried the 410(21/2") in the 444 and could not get the action to close completely. I tried two different hulls from winchester and could not get either one to get the action to close. So are the people using it as a 410 making there out of the 444 brass? I know that the 410 will work in 45-70 marlins that I have been using but I can't make it work in the 444.

410 2 1/2 " won't work in my .444 either. I just make a shot shell out of the 444 case by adding a powder carge for a 410, topping it with a plastic 410 wad and filling the case with 7 1/2 size shot and capping it with a 44 cal. gas check inverted and crimped in the case mouth. I get good results out to 20 yds . I even took it to out trap range and shot a few clays with lots of gawkers.
