444 seating bullets off kilter...and general 444 discussion thread.

This is getting friggin good....... I can't wait to see some numbers. I still am curious about the lever evo brass. I have a couple of rounds and some Rem brass. (of course the battery died in my caliper) but I'll fix that today and see the difference in length of rem brass and hornady. Hey HUNTER64, can you give me a bit more info on your reloading of the HORNADY brass and what recipe you used. That interests me a lot, as they of course are using that proprietary powder and the pointy bullet, so they said it will be hard to use their brass for non-hornday bullet/powder combinations at home. Seems like you know different.

As far as the Hornady Brass is concerned, I use my 3 groove bullet (which was designed for this purpose in mind) and load it with Unique and 2400 powder for practice loads. With this bullet the oal is slightly under the normal oal and works just fine. I have tried IMR3031 but the case capacity is so short that you can only get mid range speed out of it with out starting to show signs of pressure.

Please read my earlier posts as to difference in fps from the Ballard to the microgroove barrel, not sure why you guys are still trying to reinvent the wheel when it has already been proven.

Okay I am going to be argumentative for its own sake for a second.

The 50 fps gain may be due to a couple of reasons:

1. Maybe your new barrel is smoother then your old.

2. Maybe your new barrel's chamber is slightly tighter, or the throat shorter causing an increase in pressure.

3. Maybe the increase in pressure (and subsequent increase in velocity) is due to the heavier rifling cutting deeper into the bullet.

;)

Could be all of those or the different rate of spin. Most of your answers would have to bridge over to the 4 microgroove rifles that I have and 2 Ballard ones I also own. Both Ballard rifles gave consistent 45-65 fps quicker velocities than the 4 microgroove rifles with the exact same loading from the same batch of reloads that I made up. If I just had one rifle of each then I could see it, but when all the rifles did the same with the same chamber casts from each rifle matching as close as my dial calipers will measure, I lean toward the different rate of spin.

The figuring it out is most of the fun in this game of "Can I find the best load for my rifle".

Thanks for the results and your reasoning behind it. im going to stick to slightly faster powders in my 1:38 to try and boost the pressure a bit. i've had really good results with RE7 so far, but H335 has shot like dragonsbreath 12g loads even with mag primers. but the same batch of H335 works fine in numerous other calibers and guns. im wondering if i went back and tried the 300 grain XTP's if i could get them to hit higher with fast powder??? H335 i was getting alot of flame and hitting 6" low @ 100m with max loads.
