Were these well made? Have an opportunity to buy one and looking for valuation? Couple of stores said they sold their used examples in the mid to high 700 dollar range, is this an accurate valuation on what is a fairly rare rifle?

1000 seems to be the number, with 2 boxes of superformance ammo and scope mount base. xlr 444's apparently had an issue of irregular or even missing rifling. i would think by 2008, two years in, this problem would be solved. some complained of very shallow rifling too, again hopefully by 2 yrs in solved. everyone i talk to says their 444s shoot amazingly well. i shot an old one that did .75 inch group and this seems to be not uncommon.

Can you Scope the Winchester 356??

i have big bore 375 Win....... id take a .444 XLR over it........ now that i've got / used one.... 444 is more liker a 45-70...which is never wrong

94 big bore pre idiot safety

Tough call , but I think I'd go with the Marlin . Both are really good rifles , but I prefer the 336 over the 94 . Others would know more than me , but how hard is it to source 356 ammo/brass ? I think that would be the biggest factor in choosing one over the other .

Any idea what the twist rate on the 444 is? Is it micro groove rifling? Those would be the deciding factors for me, cool cartridge but only if the twist and rifling is suitable.

Both twist and rifling styles are “suitable”.

looking at the xlr, comparing it to 444 microgroove, it does not seem significantly deeper cut than the microgrove. were ballards not supposed to be a deep cut?
