44m or 30-30 ??

As others have mentioned the 30-30 is superior for the intended purposes. 44mag has the cool factor but does limit you a little more in range.
Both is the gun nut answer and what I have done. I do really enjoy carrying my 1894 44 with a skinner peep for deer on days I'm in the thick stuff and don't need the range.
 
Yea I’m gonna get myself a 30-30 for sure just incase I need to take a longer shot than intended and don’t have to worry about bullet drop after 100yrds or so. Just harder to find that ammo is all, but ya I’ll just need to keep my eyes peeled for some boxes and get what I can when I have extra money to do so. But yea definitely going the 30-30 route for sure

.30-30 eight days a week. The pistol cartridges haven’t proved nearly as accurate for me, range is more limited, and bullet selection is not great. A .357 or .44 is fun, but .30-30 for deer any day.

A 240 grain JSP for the .44 would probably be great out to about 75 yards, but I wonder about further given my above experience. Also so much of the ammo I see online is JHP in lighter weights. Do they have deer hunting utility?

I have shot lots of 44 mag and 3030 through 10 inch barrel Thompson Contenders (back in the handgun metallic silhouette days) and will agree that the 3030 is more accurate at 150 and 200 meters compared with the 44 mag. Especially if you have to deal with wind drift.
 
Seen a lot of 44 lever guns for sale on #######, most brand new. My guess is that they were bought to be range plinkers but most guys don't want to shoot them because of the cost of ammo.
 
It might be my imagination, but 44 Rem Mag seems to have less recoil than 30WCF. Not sure how this can be, 180gr at 2200 fps compared to a 170 gr at 2200.
 
I use a Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag for hunting deer in the thick stuff, it has worked well out to 100 yards with a 270gr JSP @ 1650 fps

The Henry X in 44 is shorter, lighter than the 30-30 version, which you'll notice every step of the season. If you're going to use the open sights, I think both cartridges will be limited more by that, than what they would be ballistically. The 44 definitely drops quicker than the 30-30, a 240gr load will be around 1750 fps from the Henry 17.4" barrel and is about a 125 yard gun (6" bullet drop from 50y zero , compared to 2.5" drop for a 150gr 30-30 with same zero...30-30 doesn't drop 6" until 160 yards where the 44 will drop 11" at that same 160y distance)

30-30. There’s really no comparison here. I could see comparing 30-30 and 32spl, or 41 and 44mag. But you’re talking apples and oranges.

My 44 maxed out at 75m as an effective hunting rifle. Beyond that the group became too big for my comfort and I sold it as I found myself leaving in the safe more and more often because of it.

I still have two 3030s and will not get rid of either. 150m easy.
 
My 357 miroku shoots like crap, I have read 44 mags often won't shoot straight either, no more revolver cartridge rifles for me
