44m or 30-30 ??

30/30 , I’ve got a Marlin trapper (16” barrel) with a small fixed scope . It groups quite respectfully at 100m with 170 gr.

Can’t wait for some nice warmer weather to get out and shoot my rifles !! Just need some 30-30 ammo for it haha have lots of ammo for my others just not 30-30 yet …. Haha

Time to get into casting and reloading

Yea for sure, have to wait for funds again haha. I’ve bought four guns in the last month n half lmao. But yea I would like to do my own slugs and reloads for the 410 shotgun, as well as the 30-30. Don’t see much point in reloads for my 22s though

How much can you push limits of 45LC and in what gun? In the other thread I described my experience handloading 45LC to the power of 44mag and even 454Casull. But those loads were tested in 460sw gun. What was your venture?

My henry 45colt pushes 250g to 1700fps and 300g to 1550 out of a 16” bbl
Short lite gun for tromping the bush. 100yrds easy.
30-30 packs more punch and distance.

If you have a gun that’s capable out to 3-400. I think a pistol cartridge would be a great addition.
Bit if it’s your only big game rifle. I’d definitely go the 30-30 route.

Is one better than the other. It's almost a rhetorical question.

For most of my life I deer hunted with a 94 30-30. For the past several years I've deer hunted with a Ruger Carbine 44mag. Is it because I think the 44mag is better? No. I just like carrying the Carbine better.

For 125 yards or less I would take the 44 magnum as it's cooler. Even cooler would be a 45 Colt with handloads

45 Colt is what I have been thinking for the 100yrd and under dogging/brush beating gun. But 30-30, 32spl or 45/70 (if your willing to pay the crazy prices for one) are the more practical choices.

30-30 has better range imho and is cheap to run with ammo everywhere.
Besides there is nothing cooler than walking my woods with my 30-30s
There is a tradition thing that can't be explained.
Although I will take my 350 Legend sometimes too.

It might be my imagination, but 44 Rem Mag seems to have less recoil than 30WCF. Not sure how this can be, 180gr at 2200 fps compared to a 170 gr at 2200.

Recoil calculations require the mass of all the ejecta, which includes the powder charge (yes, even though it's burned). If the 30-30 does kick more than the 44 it is likely due to stock design because, by the numbers (given the same rifle weight) a 170gr 30-30 at 2160 with a 28.5gr powder charge (Nosler data) should recoil 13.3 ft-lbs at 11.7 fps as opposed to a 180gr 44 Mag with a 31.5gr load (Hodgdon) should recoil at 14.7 ft-lbs at 11.6fps. I doubt that, all other variables being equal, anyone but the most discerning shoulder would notice the difference.

I have a few.44 magnums and one 30-30 winchester model 94 I bought new at k mart back in the 90s.Never carried the 30-30 much at all but have shot it a little at the range,it's fun to shoot! I can't pick a favorite I like each for its intended purpose.

Both in the Winchester 94. The 44 should be lighter, but as Lucien Cary asked, how many can distinguish between Blast and Recoil?

I have a 30-30 and a 45colt (comparable)

Inside 100yrds no deer is gonna knots the difference.

If you are going to have just one gun. Go 30-30.

Another thing yo consider is pretty much every factory 30-30 round is a hunting round

Pistol cartridges are mostly target type bullets. So need to make sure on bullet choices.

I reload. My 45colt out of a 16” barrel is a hammer.
