44m or 30-30 ??

You can make plinker 30/30 round with reddot or trail boss powder.

Ooooooo I have no reloading stuff but that’s interesting, would it be cheaper for those rather then buy factory loads from the store, 40-75$ for 20rnds lol

Intially, no. Well you would need to shop around and gather reloading gear. Probably could find gear to load 30/30 for under 150. Now I dont know what it's like finding loading components is in your area. That could be another 100-200.

Trail boss and lead cast in a 30-30 is cheap cheap cheap.
I keep a few in the pocket for popping grouse when out for big game.
160g cast @ 950fps. Only connected with 4 chickens with it. But tons of fun

For 125 yards or less I would take the 44 magnum as it's cooler. Even cooler would be a 45 Colt with handloads.

But 30-30 is probably more practical for hunting. Remember, when the 30-30 was first introduced, hunters thought it was like a laser beam. it was the 300 Winchester of the era.

If you look at the hunting history of Labrador, certainly the 44-40 (44 mag'ish)was a popular rifle cartridge in its day. However once 30-30 and to lesser degree 303 Savage caught on, the 44-40 waned in #1 popularity.

The 44s weren't outright discarded though. Often they stayed home with mother when the men went fishing or seal-caribou hunting. Or left in the remote hunting cabin, stashed close to the one wood stove along side an axe. In case one becomes stranded.

Post WW2 the lever 30-30 and surplus 303 Brit ruled the roost. A smattering of Mausers too were very cheap to acquire locally at the Hudson Bay store.

I've hunted and filled tags with both, it was a battle between gold trigger pistol grip Marlins for a few years. I ran skinner peeps on both. Still have the 30-30,the 44 was fun to play with but felt more comfortable with the 30-30 when not in the treestand. The 30-30 shoots flatter, hits harder and is always available around here.
