Ok guys ,I 've been doing reloading for a long time for rifles, now getting into hand guns (midlife crissis) and loving it.
Thought I got a deal on a set of RCBS 44mag dies ,older style but not scared up.
Only 2 dies ?? I think I am missing #2 of the set .?
the 1st has a decapper pin but doesn't touch the case .Depending on how deep I set it I can get the (expander to bell mouth the case) ??
the other die ..marked SEAT #3, will resize the case & perform a roll crimp.I can remove & reinstall the die with a washer so I can use it to size with out re-ajusting the ring to set my crimp depth stop.
I use a single stage press. this sounds fiddley but could work.
1-decap & pollish
2-resize with seater die & washer
3-bell mouth with 1st die
4-hand prime & charge
5-seat & crip bullet : w/o washer under die ring

am I crazy ? advice ? Ed

pictures please, what you talk of makes no sense!

I didn't post when I first read the topic as I wasn't quite comprehending it!

I almost dug out my 44 dies and posted pictures to ask "WTF?!?" Lol

to the OP, might I suggest you pick up some carbide dies? They make reloading straight walled cartridges sooooo much easier, lube or no lube.

A basic pistol die set contains...

#1, sizing/decapping die does touch the brass, and decaps
#2 bell the mouth, that's it, that's all
#3 seating die, which will also crimp, does NOT resize, or bell the mouth, or make coffee

I beleive what the OP as is an old set of RCBS dies. They use to deprime and flare the case neck with the same die. The sizing die did not decap back the but it resized only.If you can find a carbide resizing you will have everything you need.

Graydog

graydog You are understanding what I have , my decapping die does not resize ! but WILL bell mouth!
I must be missing the #2- Resizing die !
how nice of a fellow member to sell me a partial set. money well wasted. :(
thx Ed

"...midlife crissis..." I'll say. You have an extra 's'. Cheaper than chasing young women. snicker.
"...missing #2 of the set..." You're missing one of 'em. Although graydog might be on to something too. Never seen two die handgun dies myself.
"...die with a washer..." Usually how you switch from .44 Mag to Special. You should be resizing and belling the mouth in one step. The seating die won't size anything.

The patent for the Lyman "M" type die expired and RCBS and Redding are now using this type expander with their new dies and it works much better without over flaring the mouth of the case.

Below the center die shows the "Lyman type M" expander, it creates a straight sided "step" inside the mouth of the case. The design prevents shaving lead on cast bullets and helps align the bullets "straighter" when seating.

My new RCBS .40 S&W carbide dies seem to be working OK. ;)

You bought them used off of the EE, contact the seller and ask for instructions, it does sound like something is missing, if you have the RCBS box, go to there website punch in the product code and see what comes up.

I believe it should be a 3 die set.
If I remove the decaping pin from the die I can drop a fired case into it, full depth & it is loose !
These fired cases are snug in the cyl. of my 629.
The seating die does size them down till they are easily inserted & removed from the Cyl. ,But NOT resized properly..eg. the bullet can still slide into the case with almost no effort.

44 dies

the older rcbs dies consisted of a carbide sizeing die a die to decap and flare the case mouth and a die to seat the bullet and crimp the case. You are missing the carbide size die. suggest you contact seller ask for the missing die or a refund of your money. good luck

Really?! so they just include it with their normal die sets and your don't have to request it? i need one for my 500 mag as i feed it lead 99% of the time.

So......I was cleaning up my reloading room the other day. I happened across this set of Pacific Durachrome dies in .44 Magnum/special. I bought these dies some years ago at a gun show. They have some rust on the locking rings, but in all other respects, they are in good shape.

I feel bad that the OP got taken, and doesn't have a full die set. If he pm's me his address I will send him this full set of dies for free.......I won't use these dies, as I don't own a .44 right now, and don't plan on reloading for one any time soon.

This is one of my pay it forward moments!

Great people on here !
A BIG thank you to 7.62mm .
& the original seller offered to refund me for the 2 sets that are missing a die, Very Cool people !
Can't wait to make some loads for this bad boy !
;)

I've only been reloading straight walled revolver cases for about forty years, and I wanna get me some of those re-sizing dies that also bell the case mouth! Since the sizing dimension starts at the base of the die, (so that you re-size the entire length of the case) and you force the case into the die mouth first, I am sufficiently spatially challenged to understand how I then get a case mouth belled on the reverse of the sizing stroke.

Some of my RCBS die sets are forty years old, and they all came with three dies. Re-size and de-prime, bell case mouth, and seat/roll crimp. Carbide re-sizing die was an upgrade. The OP needs to purchase at least a carbide sizing die. A plain steel one would do, but then case lube becomes necessary. Before dashing out and buying a single die, he might want to test his other die to see if it in fact creates a proper case mouth belling, as per the illustrations in any credible loading manual. Oh, and he might read the step by step instructions in any such manual to see what everyone is fussing about. Major manufacturers' manuals are much more credible than the wondernet.

My original dies from the 60's required lubing the cases to resize.
In the 80's I bought a carbide die for resizing and both resized only.
The decapping and belling occurred with the second die.
