I know two guys who hunted in the Yukon extensively with .44's (one a Ruger semi, and one a Browning model 92 lever-action). They took black bears, grizzly, caribou and moose with them out to about 100 yards. I have no doubt you'd hammer deer no problems, as long as you were good with your gun and shot appropriate ammo.

i have used a 44 mag on deer and it drops them on the spot. i reloaded some 240 hp to rifle data and they work just fine.
