44mag or .30-.30 which would you use?

I don't get many second shots I think third and forth are just to say you have a hard on and let every one know. I just like how the Ruger feels for beating the tag alders back and changing hands while mowing though spruce and cedar bogs. I do like Winchester levers I never tried a trapper all the ones I've had were 20 " and longer barrels 26 " I think, so I fine the little carbine to be a fun tool. Oh and by the way what’s a Marlin, sounds fishy to me.

Aimed shots at running deer in the trees, can result in a lot of wounded trees. I have successfully taken deer with my fifth shot on two occassions.
And had an empty mag on the fifth shot, when of course the deer stopped broadside once. Never go hunting with a mag that's not full. Ya just never know what's gonna happen.

My father inlaw had a trapper in 32 he liked very much and he was very good with it. I have though I would watch for one, maybe someday.

John I always load all....4, but it seems I usually need to take a few out when I get back to the truck I'm the dog more often than not and see mostly tails.

Good for you, I'm usually the dogger as well. Been that way for 40 years.
The chances will come, you need to develop your technique.
Slow and easy will get you more chances than running around. You'llmake enough noise just walking through, no need to add to it, it just warns the deer you are comming.

Shoot the deer not trees.
Following the deer with your gun will result in wounded trees. This is the mistake most hunters make when shooting running deer in the bush.Took me years to learn not to do this myself.Pick your spots (window) and shoot around the brush.
Even when I am using my 30-30 I only put 5 shots in it.If you get 5 shots at a deer running in the bush your not aiming.

I'm glad to know Calabogie trees are safe. If someone wants to take more than a shot or two I don't mind if there are shooting somewhere safe. Each hunter should make up his own mind about which shots he will take.

Both I still think that's what they are doing but I don't mind if they do, I'm not against it at all.
I look for great shot but that's me. I hunt with people that might take a different veiw and I'm not bothed by it.

Where else would you get a cross eyed bass then?

Criticizm is well thought out, but aimed fire is my forte. I rarely get flustered anymore. Lead is the skill needed.
The type of bush I'm hunting, is not flat. Picking an openning is not an option usually. Although I do, when it's possible to get a lead in that openning. Too many humps and hollows. The deer do not run in nice straight lines.
By the way, most of my kills are one shot kills.
This year, one shot walking= 1shot kill
one shot running= 2 shot kill, both shots fatal hits

watch what you pick!!! not many 44 cal bullets will stand up to good velocity, premature expansion, and low penetration can be an issue on the rifles. Back up or bush gun choos something that will hold together if you need it to, if it does that, all you need to hit it in the right place.

Personal note, I'd take a 30-30 with one round over 44 with 10

There are plenty of good 44 cal bullets available, if you use a cast WFN bullet in the 44 magnum penetration should not be a problem, in fact you will probably never recover the bullet.

I think both are great. I have owned Winchester Trappers in .44 and .30-30 and standard Winchester carbines in .30-30. I have packed them all over. I still prefer the .30-30. Probably very few places you can go that sells shells, where you won't find .30-30 shells. Can't say I have seen the same for .44's.

30-30 or 44mag

Dealer told me today that the Hornady Express 30-30 for the new Marlin XLR series will fit a regular 30-30. Has the same specs as a 308. Says it is a High Energy loaded 30-30 with a squishy tip. Is this true? If so then I would go with the 30-30. Big bang little gun.

Not quite true.
The ballistics, while better than a standard flat point 30-30, are not in the same ball park as a 308.

30-30/44mag

Check the Hornady Leverevolution site. Pretty much bang on to the specs I was seeing ing the 96 Hornady loading manual. Anyways it is still way better than standard 30-30 specs. Just a high energy load in a 30-30 but 2400fps is not bad for a 30-30. Gonna be pricey too but if that is what you need then...
