.44mag or .357

If it were me, the choice would be between a Python .357 and a vintage model 29 in 44 mag. Stainless just doesn't do it for my.

Overall, I think the model 29 would be my first acquisition. The 44 is just a little more versatile, and the blued model 29 'dirty harry gun' is an icon

I'm assuming this isn't a first handgun?? If you're only going for one of the two, and if you reload, go for the .44. You can load them down to a fairly gentle level yet the potential for something more 'hot & heavy' is there should the need arise.

I have shot both, and it will not be a first gun. From what I can gather, a 44 is the better option if you are going to reload.

What is the case life like for standard 44 loads (nothing crazy, nothing too tame). What about 357?

I have shot the ruger double a fair bit and the s & W is heads and tails above

Never done the taurus

thanks for the input

I like using Winchester or Federal cases to reload...the Remington cases don't seem very sturdy to me. I don't load super hot on my .357, because my Security Six is after all a 1980 vintage gun (it was my uncle's)...so that probably explains why after around eight reloads, the cases don't show any signs of wear.

I've never tried an S&W. They always looked a bit too flashy for me. My Ruger is tough, has a decent trigger, and I can hit clays on the berm with it at 100 yards...good enough for me. I just hate cleaning it up.

I heavily prefer the .357, just because I feel it's a very well rounded handgun cartridge. The .44's great too mind you.

I say go .357, and go S&W. Skip Taurus and stick to Colts, Rugers, and Smiths for double action revolvers, it's their game. If you're into single action both Ruger (budget) and Freedom Arms (premium) make excellent single actions in these calibers.

Buy the .44. Like everyone else has pointed out, it's versatile and can be loaded from powder puff to teeth rattling very easily.

The first handgun I ever tried was a model 29. I've been addicted ever since. 357 is pretty good too, but I find it just doesn't have the smile factor as the 44.

Which one should you get? Like someone already mentioned, "get one of each" and while you're at it throw in a 627 "N" frame...

how do you work that in canada? I met a surveyor (pipelines, etc) once who had his, is it even possible for your average citzen?

You need to do a "wilderness carry course"... then if you are a surveyor, prospector, trapper or somthing of that nature, you can apply to get an ATC.

I do not believe most people can use a handgun to hunt in Canada so that rules out that angle. I have always said the 357 is the best all around calibre for most but big bores tickle my fancy. I shoot more 44s than 357s and the 44s I shoot are 44 Specials. I own 44 Mags and 357 Mags but I prefer the 44 Special. Regards, Richard:D

My favorite 44 and yes, it is a custom 3rd Model Hand Ejector:

I've got 3 model 27's, 2 model 29's and a 629. Took the 629 to the range the other day and the grin has not gone off my face since. But like other writers here I can only do a half box of that stuff before I move down to the .44 special. Out of all of these I love the 29-2, it's a classic and shoots damn straight. As for 357 I prefer the 27-1 with the 6 1/2" barrel - nicely balanced and I can shoot 38's all day.
