44mag or 44-40 or 45 colt?

I would choose the 44 mag a 270 gr Speer at almost 1700 fps out of a carbine is very lethal, i dont have much experience with the 45... JP.

Ok update, it appears it might not be possible to get the Win in .44mag takedown. They look like they are all sold. The only option right now is .357. I have heard alot of people who reload recommend that round for deer.

What are your thoughts for it as bush gun against black bears? Hard cast bullets, maybe 180 grains. Is it flexible enough for this? This is one round I dont have a huge amount of experience with other than what ive read. Ive shot it alot in the past out of snubbies, but never a rifle.

Any ideas?

Some say its possilbe to hit almost 30-30 like results if you cook it abit.

For the money spent, I myself if I were you I'd would wait for a 44 or the 45 in this carbine.
Certainly the 357 is no slouch, but you'll get better use of the bigger ones for big game hunting IMO.

my two bits

I agree with Brutus(well, sort of).

Find yourself a Marlin in .44 or 45 Colt, you will be a happy camper in the end :)

This 45 will never be sold or traded:

yeah its just getting it in a takedown that is the main concern. I have a 45/70 lever for big stuff. The takedown is just for the pack if im shooting birds or small game way up north.

Sorry buddy, missed the takedown part :bangHead:

What the above posters mentioned is not a bad idea though. I also know a few that do the same.

On my advise my buddy just purchased one of the 20" barreled Win 92 takedowns in 45 Colt from Prophet River he wanted a rifle that he could use for CASS/hunting/defense.

We were at the range with it for the first time this last friday only shot CASS loads of 200gr RNFP's over 7grs Universal Clays = 700 - 800fps I have a lot more shooting experiences than him but even so he was getting free hand 20 yard groups around 2" when I tried I ended up with one hole groups getting larger and larger.

He tried one of my top Cast Performance 335gr WLNGC loads can't remember if it he just feed it in thru he top or actioned it thru the side I'll have to check it out next time I see the gun.

If it is an issue I have several hundred Beartooth 280gr WFNGC's that I'll set him up with and as far as I am concerned one of the best bullets for this combo for hunting/defense are the 300gr Hornady XTP's...

In a strong levergun, I would go for the .45 Colt if you plan to reload. The 3 cals. could be loaded to the same pressure levels in the same rifle/action, if you are not planning to reload, the .44 mag. would be the best choice. My tests with a 340gr. WFN Gc hardcast bullet show some real knockdown on heavy steel targets. Without the use of similar heavy flatpoint bullets in the .45, I would opt for the .44 mag. with 300+grain bullets.

This.

45 Colt if you handload, 44 Magnum if you are going to use factory.

My thoughts exactly. The 45 Colt has the potential in the right gun to be handloaded into a much better stopping caliber than the 44 Mag. Of course if you don't load, or understand how to play with these things your best bet would be a 44 Mag. I wonder what it would take to ream a 45 colt levergun out to 454 casull?

I have read the .45 colt has a smaller rim, to be very suitable with stiff loads in a lever action?

I take down my Winchester all the time, remove the tang bolt and slide the butt stock
off, fits in a bag or good size pack.

Wayne how easy is it to remove the bolt? Do the threads or wood get weak or crimped over time if you keep taking off the stock?

Sorry no debate! They dont make it in .454 anymore :p

Yes they do. They just took it off the market for a bit to redesign the magazine tube since it had a problem shearing off the screw that held it in place. I think another part was Rossi being bought out by Taurus as well(?). I just bought one a few months ago that is new manufacture by Taurus. Solid little guns, fit and finish is a bit rough but if you polish the action it's slick as snot.

As for the short barreled/take down guns I would go 45 colt with hand loads as you can get it up to almost as potent as the 454, and significantly above the 44 mag from what I've been reading. Put in a 300gr hardcast and some H110 or lil'gun and you're good to go.

All you need is a slot screwdriver, I use the one on my Leatherman in the
bush. I have not had any problems with the wood geting weak or bolt damage
as long as you don't over tighten you shouldn't have any problems there.
I can't even remember how many times I have done this to make the 94
and the 92 a smaller package to tote around. I waxed the contact areas
of the butt stock and tang to prevent abrasion when sliding it on and off.
