If the longest shot is 100 yards, I'd think about something relatively big--300 grain hard cast over 17+ (max is usually given as 19.0) grains of 1100, for roughly 1200 fps (should be 1300+ out of a carbine barrel). That's plenty flat for 100 yards, and it'll hit like a truck.
Several in our camp have used .44's (including me) either Rugers or Marlins
... no problems with either deer or bear with the factory Remington 240 Soft Points. Perhaps not optimum - but adequate !
While for Leverguns and Revolvers Hard Cast Bullets are the way to go, as suggested they may not be the Best for a Semi
*Remington Express 240 SP
*Remington Express 275 JHP (I like these)
Both still deliver an Impressive 1000+ftlbs at a 100 ! & certainly anything inside of a 100 Yards is in BIG Trouble with either of these Factory Remington Loads
Depends on which Ruger, the old ones favor lighter bullets because of their slow twist. The newer ones have a 1 in 20 twist but you have to watch the overall length, also the bullet lube from cast bullets will plug the gas tube over time, I've shot cast but cleaned the barrel after a few shots.
