44N Powder

If it's from Ammomart or Higginson Powder, it was sold as slightly slower than IMR 3031. You could phone Higginson at 613 632 9300, maybe they can tell you. I shot up +/-30 lb of it in 257 Roberts, 6.5x55, 30 30, 30 06, 45 70, 30 40 krag and others. It was a good, accurate powder.

There was some discussion on these boards and others about bad things happening when ammomart 44 went bad. Do a search and make sure your powder is good. I never did have a problem when I used it, it's long gone though.

What Joe said. If it has a really strong, sour chemical smell and if there is a lot of fine red or orangs dust in the powder or if the metal inside the can is rusted or all of the above--sprinkle the powder on the lawn or burn it safely outdoors. 44 powder was sometimes not properly washed and it may deteriorate over time. I had to chuck the last 8# of it that I had and that was about 10 years ago.

I shot off over 20 pounds of it, using 3031 specs, exactly as the books printed them with very good results.

The last 7 pounds I had, all in 1 pound paper containers with metal tops and bottoms, all went bad. They went bad after about 15 years of storage, under very good conditions. The powder started to clump and sweat. When I noticed there was trouble, the steel racks the powder was stored on, was raining rusty dust.

Just understand, this happened very quickly. It also happened inside cartridges I had already loaded. I ruined the barrel on a M70 FWT in 257Rob because I didn't clean the highly corrosive residue that was in the bore after a nasty weather shoot. I left it for a week, while I went on vacation and when I came back, the bore looke like someone had used a ballpeen hammer on it.

If your can of powder is showing rust inside, dump it in the garden. Makes great fertilizer in the flower beds.

I do know some fellows that bought that stuff in the late 70s and are still using it. Seems like it was only one batch of it that went bad. I guess I was lucky enough to get some of that batch.

Thanks for all the input. This stuff is in plastic milk jugs....smells like powder...not acid. It's loose with no clumping. The dates written on the jugs is '91.
If I see any red dusting I'll throw it in the garden.
