44Russian not holding full #### in Single Action

Hey All,

I've had some issues with my S&W 44Russian DA not holding full #### in single action. It's been a bit finicky for a while but It recently dropped the hammer without pulling the trigger. Double Action works fine, but I want to want to make sure everything is safe. I've heard this can be a common problem with the old 44Russians.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Is this an easy fix, and if so can you recommend a gunsmith to work on this old gal?

The notch in the hammer needs to be filed to hold ####. At worst welded up and refiled. Not a hard fix at all. Pretty easy job to deepen the notch a bit. Take er apart and have a look.

Could also be a weak or broken sear spring. I'm not familiar with the old S&W, they could be different. I have an old American Bull Dog DA in 44 Russian and the spring sear is my problem.

All of the above, plus have a look at the trigger sear surface.

So, Hammer notch, Sear spring, and Sear surface on the trigger itself.

If there’s an adjustment screw on the inside edge of the frame between the grips, try turning it in a bit at a time until the hammer holds back. I’m no gunsmith but that solved same issue with my old S&W.

It is most likely a worn rear sear, an easy fix, contact Rustywood Trading in Mission BC he has some new CNC cut sears for the S&W 44 DA's in stock. Probably 50 % of the ones I purchase all have the same issue.
