I just bought a marlin 45-70 and was wondering if anyone here has one and what kind of optics they have and what you may recommend. I was particularily interested in the Williams peep sights, does anyone here use them? do you need a smith to install them?

I've mounted a Leupold Vari-X II, 1x4 on my 1895GS, using Weaver Pivot mounts.

Works well but a set-up with more eye relief would be my suggestion. With some of the hotter loads the Marlin is capable of handling, especially with heavier bullets, the amount of eye relief I have is borderline at best.

I have a similar set-up on my Marlin 444S and seems to work fine there, mind you the 265gr Hornady bullets in the 444 are a little lighter and lower recoil than the 405gr Remington bullets I'm using in the 45-70.

I went old school on my 1895s and mounted a vintage Simmons Deerfield 4x40wa with Leupold QD base and rings.

fast acquisition and good eye relief.

my 444 got a 6x Redfield Lowpro in low Weaver rings on a customized Weaver base. Easy to pop the scope off and use the iron sights.

Now if I looked half as good as I used to I wouldn't need any glass cluttering up my shootin irons... sucks gettin old... :p

:confused:Is age the reason behind our need to 'put on glass'?? I've always blamed it on our 'going metric'.

Yes:(, sometimes getting old does suck,;)but it beats the alternative:).

all I know is that I never needed a scope for straight walled cartridges till I got old...er...

when I finally pack it in I hope it's not from old age...maybe a jealous husband or renegade bronc :p
