45-70 350Grain load data???

If you want a shoulder saving plinking/bench load for that cast bullet, try 12-15gr Unique, no fillers.(1000-1200fps)
Just charge one case at a time(by weight),double check, and put a bullet on it, and you won't get yourself in a fix.
The older Lyman books have lots of cast data for Unique in rifles.

I hope you are speaking of H4198 cause IMR will do more than rattle your teeth. Now just where did my shoulder go?

Wouldn't matter too much whether it was 45gr of H4198 or IMR4198 in this instance, pressure levels and velocity would be close enough you probably wouldn't notice a difference. Not to say it's a light load because it's not, but it's not a crazy over the top load, either.

Well, you might say so, but I'll take it from my experiments that 44.8gr of H4198 chronys at about the same as 43.5gr of IMR4198 in my Marlin. That testing used up the last of my I4198 and since I have enough H4198 to last me for more than a few years, that is what I'll stay with. From the velocities and pain I was receiving, I backed down to 43.6gr of H4198 for a max load and that is where I will stay. Your rifle and your shoulder might react differently.

I shoot 45gr IMR4198 with a 350gr cast bullet and didn't see a remarkable difference in recoil from the same load of H, in a 26" heavy octagon bbl M1886. Both loads were quite manageable in my rifle but it is quite heavy. The 405gr bullets at max loads do start to smack a bit more.

Neither H or IMR 4198 are terribly efficient at the lower pressures and leave unburned powder in the barrel even with 45gr loads. But both powders seem to still be quite consistent even though they are below optimum pressure for 100% burns. I've loaded IMR down to 1450/1500 fps with the 350gr bullet and still gotten reasonably consistent velocity, unlike many other powders.

It always amaze me that people want to reload and do not buy a manual. Lyman reloading manual and their cast bullet book has plenty of data for cast bullet. Reloading with ‘INTERNET’ data is a sure way to screw up and end up in trouble.

Much more than velocity than I got.

He probably has "Special" 4198

I have several books
I wouldn’t rely on the internet to reload
I just started reloading last year the books I have purchased DONT have cast bullets in them

Cast bullet produces less pressure than jacketed bullet with the same powder charge. For 45-70, you can use jacketed bullet data for a cast bullet safely because seldom get over 1800-1900 fps and cast bullets can work well in that range. The limiting factor is lead fouling if velocity gets too high.

Send a PM to CGN member GreenBob - he has digital versions of several reloading manuals, including cast bullet data. Lots of other gun stuff too, free to download.
