Heading into Coastal Grizz country this fall for some very remote Salmon river fishing with a little gold panning for fun, my fav. Marlin G.G. load is a heavy load of 405 gr. over nearly 50 gr. of 3031.(don't do this yourself-work up to a load) I don,t have a recipe for 500 gr. Could deffinatly stick with the 405's but have always wanted to try something a bit heavier .Not recoil sensitive but not looking for a max load- just a starting point. There are some very knowledgeable 45/70 members here.

I have used 30 gr of IMR4198 under Hornaday 500 grain bullets and gone as high as 37 gr in my #3, but, the 30gr was more accurate and easier to hold on to...plus it leaves lots of room in the case for that long bullet.

Was wondering about compressed loads with the long bullets and my desire for a stout load,Picked up a box of Hornady 500 gr. DGS today. Will start load development tonight.I have some 4198 will try a few.Thx

I load 540gr. Garrett bullets. hard cast that is. in front of 40 gr. H322 the exact same load in the Garrett cartridges.com what a thumper. in my xlr and sbl with no feed problems at all. you must read his article.

Dam those 500 gr. are long ,made up a dummy round to check cycling and set dies against. Very deep seated projectile, will be starting @ 30 gr. of 4198, thx for info so far, will post results soon if my jackass boss will let me have some time off - yes i am self employed.

"...wondering about compressed loads..." The load won't be compressed unless your manual says it is. Otherwise, compressed loads are nothing to worry about.

I couldn't locate 500gr bullets back when the GG's first came out so I worked up 405gr hard cast loads with several powders and settled on Re7. Over the sky screens that short tube spit out those 405gr's at a whisker under 2000fps with my case/primer/charge combo. Friends would try it and think it was a fun little gun with 1300fps loads, then try one of my stompers. Usually one shot and they'd hand it back with some words I can't type here, lol. I can only imagine what a 540gr load outta that little pipsqueak would have felt like!

I have a handi rifle and load cast 500 gr with 40 gr of H322
Very Thumpy lol, but accurate , the marlins have short chambers
I had my chamber opened up in handi, it was set up for the
Lever action length loads, most of he Ruger level loads or 500gr
Loads in general have OAL to long for the cycling in the marlins
However, if you use powders like 4198 or 322 that don't fill
The case, it will allow unto seat that big slug deeper
Another load u may consider is the hornady 350 round nose
Which was designed for 458 win mag, I use it in handi rifle
46gr of IMR4198 no issues, seat bullet to canulure
Will cycle the marlins no problem, roughly 1770 fps in my
20" barrel, and will drop anything u point it at

Yup thats what happens with my 405 gr loads too then i let them shoot off a 525 at 1665 fps and then they will develope a flich ! LOL RJ

ok we have from right to left :
300 gr. hollow point
325 gr. hornady flex tip
405 gr. s.p.
500 gr. cop./lead core sitting on a warm charge of 3031 -(?) pls don't ask for specific powder work your way up.- O.A.L. = 2.590 Will feed reliably through my G.G. i brought it back a bit from there.500 gr. is a long projectile and sits very deep in the case. Can't crimp on the cannelure, should be a stout load.
