Hi There

I am looking for some feedback and options. I have a nice 45/70 Marlin Guide Gun I shoot for Moose, Ammo that I am using, Lever Revolution 45-70 Government 325 gr FTX®. That being said, I am thinking of hunting with this for Deer this Year (Less than 200 Yards etc...) Is my current load, that I am using the Revolution to much? Options on loads for deer welcomed......

Thanks

Your load will work fine. Consider how many deer are killed annually with shotgun slugs, typically .72/437 at 1600. Your .45/70 can only be better in terms of penetration, range, and accuracy. I prefer heavy for caliber bullets in .45 caliber rifles, but they aren't necessary or even much of a benefit for your application.

My understanding of the Flex tip bullet is that it is really quite soft, more appropriate for Deer than Moose actually. No need to change anything if you like shooting the flex tips.

Barnes makes both a 250 gr. and a 300 gr. TSX FN bullet in .458 specifically for the 45-70 gov't. If you reload then you may wish to consider these bullets as an alternative to the LeverEvolution in 325 gr. I am a believer in TSX for several reasons, not the least of which are; no lead fragments in the meat, effectively 100% weight retention, and excellent expansion/penetration. JMO.

Should be a great deer load. You want a soft bullet for quick expansion. That ftx should be about right for "drop on the spot" performance. You will have to pick out some bullet pieces but that makes for great supper table conversation.

My thoughts as well and what I will be feeding my 45/70 TSX this season. :)
