Hi all,
I am going to be picking up a Henry all weather lever action in 45-70 as soon as I can pull together the cash for it however I have been out of the buying ammo game for a while as I've been burning through my stock pile I've collected over the last couple of years. Just wondering what I can expect on the high and low side for prices on this calibre.

Thanks in advance!

Saw some at CT for $45 the other day. I've seen max load Buffalo bore going for close to $100 That's about as cheap as it gets. 45-70 is very much a reloaders caliber. It can be loaded down to mouse fart loads which make for a more enjoyable time at the range. Full load aren't for the faint of heart, and usually don't make for extended range sessions

Pretty much have to reload 45-70 if you want to shoot a lot. From what I've seen, $40 to $60 a box. I plink with cast loaded with unique for pennies pretty much. Stay away from the hornady if you ever do plan on reloading. The brass is shorter. It can still be reloaded, but is a pain.

I've looked everywhere as well. Expect to pay $47 plus tax for the Win/Fed/Rem. Hornady LeverEvolution is about the same from Cabela's/Bass. Barnes/Buffalo are $65+.

Get set up to reload if you plan on shooting it a lot. Casting your own bullets also makes the. 45-70 much more affordable to shoot. Cheapest I've seen factory ammo lately was $45 and change for 20 rnds of Remington using their Core-Lockt bullet. FYI: Be aware that some Hornady brass is short if you're buying 1X brass sight unseen.

Get yourself a "Lee Classic Loader" & you can put together some accurate, fun loads to shoot!
Works good with cast bullets & some fast pistol powder for some easy on the shoulder fun.
I still use this method sometimes for working up a load or just for the fun of it.

Happy shooting & enjoy the 45-70!
