I have shot the 405grn tripple and single lube gas checks for years and years about 5 years ago i bought like 600 from them lol.

Such great bullets to shoot.
The gas checks worked much better then non gas checks fyi. looks like they have differnt grain choices now too. 525 / 390 / 405 / 450 and even 350's now.
These are hard casts and will not deform on impact with practically anything.

You can shoot through a 3 foot tree block with it and the exit hole will be 45 Caliber heh.

good rounds and very accurate and consistent.

Those new 390 grn Gas Checks look good to me.

I shot a range an Angus range cow a few years ago using a Bullet Barn 405 grain hard-cast. The cow was about 100 feet away facing me with her head half way down when I put one right between her eyes. The bullet went through the cow's skull and went about a foot into the neck. Penetration is not an issue with these bullets although expansion can be minimal at times.

For bear protection however - and I am assuming you mean black bears - I would suggest the Hornady 325 FTX as a better choice.

very true . which is why i said the part about it not expanding even when fired into a giant block of wood.

but with a 45 Cal round you may not need as much expansion.

I shot a large buck with one and it blew out the spine. turned and followed the skin of the back down the ribs. broke through 5 ribs and stopped somewhere around his ass under the skin .

Flipped that buck right over lol.

I just ordered some 350gr RNFP SLG and 390gr FN GC from then and was wondering how fast I can drive each of them without leading up the barrel.

Also, any truth to some internet chatter about their bullets being smaller diameter thus increasing leading?

Thanks for the link. I will order some from Henry.

Are you keeping your loads under ~1200 fps or are you pushing them faster since there is a gas check?

I am running mine at ~1800 fps out of my 22" barreled (Ballard rifling) Marlin. I found the hard cast were lead-fouling worse at low velocities than they were at the upper levels. (failing to obturate?)

I used to shoot the older Bullet Barn 405gr gas checked bullets at just over 1700 fps with minimal leading in my Marlins. By minimal I mean after 20 or 30 I'd find a few small flakes on the patches when cleaning. All of the 45 cal bullets I've bought from them have been .459"

Chris.

1800 abouts on the chronograph @ about 8ft out.

405Grn gaschecks.

I'm shooting a (2006) Marlin SS Guide Gun pre remlin takeover.

I can measure them when i'm back to the reloading room @ the homestead.

I've had really good accuracy out of these at this fps.

but they do jackhammer your shoulder a bit at those load strengths

2073. thats pushing the action of your gun.
far exceeding the recommended load's
even my 1800FPS loads are exceeding recommended by a fair amount.

i hope thats with a 22" or longer barrel lol which would be the only way that would be even reasonably safe on any 45-70 action.
