45-70 and moose

I have shot two deer with the 350 hornady round nose. Both were in and out of the rib cage . Loonie size entrance and exit. No meat damage. I shot an elk with the same bullet . Entered in the ribs and hit the far side leg. Same loonie size entrance the bullet came apart on the far shoulder . Elk was DRT. These were shot from a ruger number one at 2100 fps.

Has anyone tried the Hornady Lever evolution 45-70 325 gr ftx

I have. I used that round at the range and blew a 12x12x24" hardwood block to toothpicks at 75M with one shot. I figure a Blackie or a Moose should drop in it's tracks with one shot to the boiler room this year. I have a new Marlin 1895 that puts 4 rounds into an 8" target at 75M with iron sights. In Ontario,we might have a spring Black Bear hunt back this year.

You may want to try out the heavier hard cast with a wide meplat. Although they don't expand, they cut a pretty amazing channel right from the point of impact. And penetration is incredible, even if heavy bone is hit. The only downside is you rarely recover a bullet. But the wound channel has to be seen to be appreciated.

I would but no one I know of in Canada makes them; and yes, I know - cast my own. That is not a viable option for the foreseeable future. Does anyone know of a commercial caster that makes the bullet you describe.
You mentioned "wide meplat". How wide is wide? IE .20, .25 or 4.5mm, 5mm, etc. Also the BHN is critical in those bullets. What BHN do you use?

As mentioned, Bullet Barn is probably the best local Canadian supplier for hard cast. But Jethunter here on cgn makes a great 385gr cast, but casts them somewhat softer, so you will get some deformation.
The actual size of meplat does matter, the bigger the better. The best I've ever used are made by Jae-bok Young. Check out his website and you will see he has some very wide meplats. He's out of the U.S., but has very good bullets. The bullet channel from them is quite incredible.

I can highly recommend the 450gr from the Bullet Barn loaded to 1500fps will do everything you could possibly want. It's not too horrific on the shoulder and fairly easy on brass at those speeds. Their 390gr gas check is also pretty good if you want more speed, but it definitely isn't nessecary, and the meplat isn't as wide. With a wide meplat hard cast bullet you don't need expansion. You can think of them as "pre-expanded" Bullets. You probably won't recover any of them but they do the job!
