Any one have any sub 31900 psi loads that regulated well in a Baikal double 45/70 , Im thinking I'll try a 390-405 cast gas checked bullet @ 1400-1550 fps with H4895 to start but would like to hear what worked best in yours?

Lee molds 500gr bullet, 41gr imr3031 200cci primer starline brass egulated decent at 75 yards.
40gr bullet 46.5gr varget or 40gr, 3031, 200 cci starline brass decent better accuracy to a 100 yards.

Best so far has been 405gr bullet with 67gr of goex cartridge federal match magum primer win cases annealed fantastic banged steel to 180 yards have been using goex 2f and it is still good cartridge grade slightly better.

I threw some 13-15 grain unique loads together with the 390 cgc from the bullet barn together the other night and had a blast. The regulating device worked really well and my last group with 15 grains of unique had the left and right barrel touching stacked on top of each other @ 60 yds.
I'll try your varget load on sunday and see how it does in my rifle, thanks a bunch for the response!

RJ, there is some debate by some physics/engineering types over on the kifaru forums some say they are good for 40,000 psi loads others dont. The manufacturer states 31900 psi and that's what I intend to abide by, It wouldn't be much fun loaded to that level anyways as its really light.

28000 cup. I'm currently shooting 50 grs varget and 405 gr Oregon lazer cast bullets at 1550 fps. I have 3" height difference at 75 yards. That's Ok for me. 405 gr Remington jacketed at 50 yards almost touch with the same loads.
I have pushed 405 gr loads to 1950 fps and 350 gr to 2050 fps. Recoil was sharp and the muzzle rise was drastic. Also the twist was very noticeable
Over all I love mine

I have thought about owning a Baikal double in 45-70 - are these GOOD - QUALITY actions or ??? I would like to shoot HOT loads like i do out of my 45-70 95 g like 400 gr cast at 2000 fps - 525 ger cast at 1500 fps :d RJ

Those are skookum loads. 1885 or #1 territory. Not what you want to feed the Baikal.

Do some research on the Baikals, and on loading for a SXS, some will shoot well, some will require regulating, some will require something more than that. Handloading for them may be an experience, SXS rifles are not like any other rifle to load for, they just don't work the same way, Pressure signs for any other rifle, are too much on a break action, and SXS's just don't shoot the same way.

Have you thought about Black Powder?
I use a 405 grain Hollow Base bullet that I make with my trusty Lee mold
I then hand lube with a 50/50 bees wax and Crisco lube
Then load 70 grains of 2f
Put a wonder wad in then seat and compress the powder

You will never exceed pressure levels with Black Powder. Decent load, nice and accurate. Travels about 1350-1450 fps
Just remember after shooting to clean it properly: put a funnel in each barrel and pour hot water down each barrel then use a patch and jag. Repeat several times until the patches are clean. Then oil with good old Olive oil (petroleum based oil gums up black powder)

P.S. wash your brass as well.

I emailed the specs to garret cartridges. He said the baikal is fine for his hammerhead loads which are very hot. He had mentioned the frame is not prone to stretching and the locks and hinge can take a lot higher pressures than 28000. I'm not saying that's right or correct. I'm saying that Garrett cartridge guaranteed me some of their loads are safe. They fall into the upper 1895 class loads.
I have pushed mine for curiosity and fun. No negative effects so far. My action is still plenty tight

My skinner aperture sight arrived yesterday, took the insert out and instant ghost ring. Man what an improvement over the standard sights , gonna try and get out tonight after work to see how it works at the range.
