45-70 barrel length

I was wondering what the best barrel length for 45-70. I've been thinking about a Marlin lately in 45-70.

In a Marlin you can go with the 18.5" Guide gun... I have .45/70's, .45/90's and .45/120's in 18", 20", 24", 26" and 32"... I personally favor the shorter lengths. The .45/70 does well in short barrels as do most straight wall cartridges... They give up less velocity per inch than do bottleneck cartridges IME.

I like 20" but like he said above 45-70 does well in short barrels. The longer barrels are for sight radius with open sights

I was thinking about a1895 cowboy if I can find one. I might end up with the 1895 G. Now to start saving up for one. Thanks for the replies. That's good to know the barrel length is not an issue.
