45-70 bfr

Anyone have a good recipe for handloads in a 45/70 BFR? I put 3 boxes of factory ammo through it last night and it worked great and is really managable but lots of unburnt powder on the bench.....

Hi T870,

Found the same thing with factory ammo and even my plinking 405gr loads.

My 350gr loadings seem to burn way more completely, I use H4198 for both loadings (seems to be a good all around powder for the 45-70). Off the top of my head can't remember the exact grains but it was a little above the starting load for a lever action marlin, not the trapdoor data.

Also had good luck with W231 in a 350gr loading too (pretty sure it was W231).

Will PM you later tonight.

Just a quick question, how were the factory loads in the BFR? After firing off a bunch of hot 44MAG loads, the BFR with factory ammo was almost anti-climatic.

Factory Winchester and Federal were pretty mild.... But I regularly shoot hot 44 mag out of my 29-5 and a Remington pistol in 50-70 so it really didn't bother me much although I find it a tad heavy with the 10" barrel.

That 10" barrel is too long for fun shooting. I realize it's good for our American friends who can use it for hunting.

But we need a 4.2 inch model for Canadians to have fun with at the range.

It sure dwarfs my N frame smiths.....

And makes my .32 look even smaller... :D

Yeap, most factory ammo is very mild in the BFR.

It's a lot of fun with hotter stuff :D

Can't even imagine what the BFR would be like with the Buffalo Bore ammo, thinking it might be a "wrist snapper" ;)
