Does anyone build one of these, other than in a custom rifle? I know the #1 can be had, but I'm thinking I need a new bolt in the old Gov't. Already have an XLR (and it rocks).

Bolt Action 45-70

The only bolt action 45-70 I know of, was made on the old Siamese Mauser action. I think custom build is the likely option. Someone must have commercially manufactured a rifle in that caliber.

If you had to have a custom 45-70 manufactured would a P-14 action be suitable for the job?

A friend of mine had one built, by another mutual friend here.
I THINK they used a P14 acton. If you are interested you could PM me for details.

There was one on EE not to long ago might still be around? Can't remember what type of action it was on. Seach in there might still be there.

There has been quite a few built on Enfield actions. Some outfit in the states use to make them commercially (Gibbs) but they are no longer around.

All custom jobs (AFAIK) these days.

It's only about 500 bucks to get the 'gibbs' conversion done to a no 4 enfeild here in canada. And that's with a new barrel - so if you find a decent enfeild with a shot out barrel or something for 150 it's still pretty reasonable.

I think 45-70 and 444 marlin are two favorite "retirement" round for old military rifles that have had their barrels "shot out" (badly worn from heavy use).

I'd love to find or make a SMLE jungle carbine in 45-70.

I've got pix of the conversion, basically rebarrel, grind the extractor, add sheetmetal mag lips, tune for feeding and GTG if anybody can post pix let me know, and i'll forward

I found a No 4 action and picked it up, and a friend in the US is doing the 45/70 conversion.
