I recently bought a Marlin 1895 GBL in 45/70 and will be reloading for it. I'll probably buy a few boxes of factory ammo first for the brass.

Just wondering if you guys can recommend any sources for cheaper .458 bullets? Not after premium hunting bullets right now.

I'll probably get into casting eventually. I have lots of lead but don't have any molds or sizing equipment.

I cast lee molds and have had a friend get really good results with .458 405-F and 405-HB

I've had excellent luck with the 405HB from lee as well.
Alox lube doesn't seem sufficient in my experience. I pan lubed with success

I just bought a Marlin SBL in 45-70 (it arrives tomorrow according to tracking) and am getting rigged out myself. I bought starline brass at Budget shooter supply @ $71/100 (I bought 200), 405 gr hard cast bullets from Bullet Barn (I think it was $68 for 200). Most of the time it is cheaper to buy loaded rounds and then use the brass, but When you get to the larger calibers it often isn't the case. Loaded rounds are about $45 minimum/20. I am loading light for most plinking, using Trailboss.

Cast is the only way to go if you want to shoot alot 45/70.

These are the results my friend achieved with the bullets i cast for him. I haven't tried this combination but i have had good results with .459 at lower speeds just not as good as this.

Great info guys. Thanks!

I'm wondering if I buy the molds, and get a Lee Lube and Sizing Kit (or other make) if the .457 diameter would be big enough, or I might have to go with a 459 Diameter sizing die?

Only place i know who sells .459 or even .460 size dies is trackofthewolf. The lee molds i have drop 458 but I powder coat which brings it to around .460. You could always buy a custom mold, but they are not cheap.

have you tried shooting them just as your die drops them??? Just get a larger sizer/lube die. Much cheaper and easier than buying a mold. I have two 45-70s that I cast three different weights and shapes for. I don't size any of them. I just use the 50/50 beeswax/lard mix for lube that I float in a pan and set the bullets into base first. I run them through a 45/70 case that has the rim intact but the rest of the base turned out. This is done after all has cooled enough and gets rid of the extra lube. When loaded I wipe the rest off with a cloth. Messy yes but that is part of the charm. I load with black powder only so the extra lube if any is there doesn't cause any issues.

My 458 diameter molds all throw .4585 bullets consistently. Close enough. I have tried .459/.460 and .461 diameters. No difference in accuracy.
