45/70 cast bullets,best powder

H322 is my fav.
Some guys get good results out of IMR4198, but I don't like it as much as 322. YMMV
Also for a change of pace get yourself some Trail Boss...13 grains of Trail Boss under a 405 grain cast makes a nice load with minimal recoil.

I've used Reloader 7 and H322, I like both and both will work well for you. H322 is good for bullet weights from 300 to 550 grains. There are plenty of other choices. Imr or H 4198 is good, as is H335, Imr 3031, and I like alliant 2400 for light plinking loads. Look at Joes site of "real guns" he has pressure tested data for cast bullets using Reloader 10. Apperently its pretty good stuff too. http://www.realguns.com/loads/4570cast.htm

Good luck

I cast and shoot plain base bullets in my 45/70 Sharps. I've used a 490 grain tapered and the standard Gov't bullet molds (both Lyman). I just cast using straight WW. Homemade pan-lubed with 60/40 Crisco/beeswax.

I get great results with 23 grains IMR SR4759, it is very accurate. My second choice is IMR 4227.

I use either large pistol primer or LR primers, a 1/4 sheet of t-paper wad over the powder, and a LDPE wad under the bullet.

Hope this helps,

Darryl
