Before sombody jumps down my throat, yes I did read and post in the 45-70 thread but never got an answer, so I figured Id try myself. I have a bunch of 405 grain RNFP hard cast non-gas checked bullets that I bought at russels, but I have no load data. I already have alot of IMR4064, but I wouldnt mind buying other powders to try em out. The loads will be used in a Marlin 1895GS. Any data would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

The following is a load I found to work well in a Pedersoli (Remington Rolling block replica) I used to have. As it wasn't a gas checked bullet I kept the load to a light plinking load, and haven't tried it in my Marlin 1895GS, yet. The info I used as a basis I got from an old 1st edition copy of the Lyman Handbook Of Cast Bullets.
- 405gr RNFPBB
- WW case
- CCI 200 primer
- 26gr IMR 4227 (listed loads are 22-27grs)
- C.O.L 2.527"
- Filler, cut to the required length. (Made from Stop drafts foam backer rod.)
Just as a word of caution, watch your C.O.L. In a Marlin lever action, the C.O.L. is critical, for ejection of loaded cartridges.

I wouldn't hot rod those Bevel base bullets as they will lead badly if driven hard, they are designed to drop from moulds easily, when production casting by machine. Moulds that have sharp edges and multiple grease grooves and gas checks are difficult to cast with machines but are capable of much higher vel. levels in the 45/70, my two favourite powders for the heavy 45/70 loads are RL-7 and AA-2015, a fellow shooter, B. Mitchell of Mitchell ballistics recommends H-335 and H-322 for his heavy loads using M.T. Chambers 465gr. Flatnose gascheck (BHN 22)

405 grain Lee cast ."plain base"

28.0 grains Alliant 2400 powder...405 Lee with reversed gas check under it..1558...1530...1533 f.p.second...3 shots/100 yds/ 1.50 inch.

32.0 grains 2400..405 Lee..reversed gas check..1690..1682..1708 fps..3 shots/100yds/1.60 inch..

hs45/70.......your mileage may vary

Saeco 425gr spire point or lyman flatnose 460gr 20:1 lead & tin with 24 - 25gr 2400, hand lubed with Canadian Tire Moly Grease - both gas checked, but no leading trouble plain based. Have had the average of 4 consequtive 5 shot groups under 1 " at 100 yds out of a rolling block with good iron sights with the Saeco mold. Individual groups under 1" with the Lyman.

My rifle shows a marked preference for 20 : 1 over the wheelweight alloys.

Good luck!

To bad there's no gas check.
Stay with the loads designed for trapdoors, or slightly above, and you should get good accuracy with minimal leading, assuming you use a good lube.

With Gas checks, you can use loads designed for jacketted bullets. I have best results with 4198 (IMR + Hogdon) and Rel 7.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try out some of those other powders, but id like to burn through my stock of 4064 as well. Anyone have any loads for that powder?
thanks again
