.45-70 for hunting?

This is on an FN-K98 action, you'll need C4 to make it KB.

I am mistaken about the 458 American being a bottleneck case. I'll just go ahead and slap myself for that last comment. :slap:

I really should have checked first, but I really didn't want anyone tearing off and doing something dangerous at my behest!

Most if not all of the readily available factory 45-70 ammo other than Hornady's new Leverlution 325gr loads are only loaded to original velocities which is due to so many trapdoor rifles still in use so you are not getting the true potential from a 45-70 unless you reload.

That is why many that don't reload like my hero go for a 450 Marlin instead of a 45-70 and I totally agree with him that a 350gr jacketed bullet @ 2150fps (I prefer 350gr Swift A-Frames) are an awesome all round performer that makes it easy to shoot out to 250 yards when I am using a scope and 150 yards when I use my ghost ring sights.

If you load up the heavier 525gr - 550gr hard cast wide meplat gas checked bullets you do no need velocities above 1600fps I load my heavy bullets to the following velocities...

525gr Beartooth Pile Driver's = 1600fps
550gr Jae-Bok Young Crater's = 1580fps

You just don't need to push these heavy bullets faster Randy Garret states that penetration is reduced if you push them above 1600fps which is why his 540gr 45-70 loads that he sells are loaded to give 1550fps.

With my 1895 GG and XS Sights rear ghost ring sight shooting from field positions I easily put 6 of my 350gr Swift A-Frame loads into 6" @ 150 yards.

Shooting my 22" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 45-70 loaded with my 325gr Hornady FTX reloads (same bullet that is used in their Leverlution ammo) @ 1800fps with a Leupold 1-4X duplex reticle scope set on 4X I am sighted in 1" high @ 100 yards and the top of the bottom post is dead on @ 210 meters.

I hand load. I didn't when I bought the rifle though, hence choosing the .450. I just duplicate the factory round in my handloads. why mess with a good thing, has always done everything I have asked of it.
