.45-70 GOV'T revolver with a "swing-out" cylinder?

Unless you are patiently waiting for handgun hunting to become legal again.
Then again, some aren't so patient.

.410 out of a short rifled barrel isn't going to give you any accuracy past what ... 10 yds tops? If handgun hunting were to be allowed again (yes we did have it before), plinking Grouse would be better with a .22 semi-auto or revolver than with "The Judge" and .410 shells... but of course that is just my opinion.

Get one of these and bore it out to 0.458. It should be able to take the .004" boring without any issues as 45/70 is far lower pressures than a 454 casull.(for those to lazy to click it's the new Taurus 454 casull/45colt/.410 shotshell handgun)

10 yards?....That's almost 30 feet!

... or the 500 S&W?

Good choice;). A guy I used to work with moved up to your area, Bouchie Lake actually, a couple of years ago and he has one as well. The 500 is a 'handful' with hot loads and heavy bullets but it does shoot well:D.

OK, so I'm being overly optimistic ... more likely 10 ft. The bottom line being that any shot through a rifled barrel is going to suck big time for accuracy. Wounding game is not the way to go. Using any of the many .410 shotguns I have, I can pick the head off a Grouse well past 10yds. Using a .22 handgun would yield a clean kill or a clean miss.

Yes, I know Jim well. I have given him some of the 400grn cast bullets I made with my single cavity mold (I used wheel weights). We're playing with loads for them. A while back you passed on some recipes to me for the 500grn Hornady bullets. I loaded a few and they were not as bad as I was anticipating. My GOD what a chunk'o'bullet to toss out a handgun!

In jacketed bullets it seemed that once I went over the 400gr weight the groups started opening up, for me anyway. I did 'try' the 500gr Hornadys but never continued on with them after that. With the 400gr Sierra, and both the 350gr Sierra and Hornady HP's is where the accuracy is best for me. Actually a 'modified' 325gr Speer HP also does really well.

Cast bullets, I have a good selection or variety I get from friend locally and again, those that work best for me are in the range of 350gr - 440gr. The 440gr GC is probably my favorite. :)Say hi to Jim for me the next time you see him.

Yeah, I was sorta kidding on the 10 yds. being close to 30ft.:)
But just for argument sake, if it were reamed out to be a smothbore, do you think it would produce a much better pattern? Just thinkin'.

.. well .. that would be a hell of thing to do to a revolver just to shoot shot. Even with a cylinder bore .. on that short of a pipe .. I would suspect there wouldn't be much accuracy. If it wasn't illegal ... you would be better to chop up an old hinge action shotgun.

I picked up a box of those from Friesen the last time I was on the Coast .. haven't loaded any yet.

With the Sierra 350Gr JHP, I've been loading them with 40grns of H110 and recently .. I've been having problems with the primers backing out and jamming up the cylinder. I'm thinking the brass may be just too old now and the primer pockets are too lose .. I've re-loaded this brass about ten times now ..

OK, suppose at the end of that bored out barrel, we install a X-Full Poly Choke? How's our patterning now?

lol - Well you got me ..? I have no idea.. the choke on a shotgun is in the last inch or two of the barrel so .. the length of the pipe in front of it "shouldn't" matter too much for patterning .. in theory. I can see the length having more influence on pressure/speed but I am no expert.

I got my supply of 325gr Speers from the guy I get my cast bullets from and what he does is add a cannelure groove to allow crimping. The basic loads for the 325gr I used was from info for the 350gr HP's. I later contacted Speer, told them the loads I was using and the caliber and gun they were used in and asked their opinion. They said they'd estimate my velocities to be about 1750 f/sec - 1800 f/sec and STRONGLY suggested I drop the loads to the 1500 f/sec range as that's what their bullet was designed for out ot the 50AE.

Brass, I've had problems with adequate ignition when using H110 with some of the earlier production stuff made to accept large pistol primers. That I now use for lignter loads with say Unique. Much of the newer production stuff such as starline is made to accept large rifle primers, which has cured those inadequate ignition problems.

To end the shot shell discussion go watch this video. Things spray badly until you use 000 buckshot, which I suspect actually engages the rifling.

:DWho am I kidding. I don't care so much about hunting grouse with a handgun, as I am about "carrying" in the bush, to make me feel like a cowboy.:)
Think I would just stick with a 45 Colt SAA. And head shots.

Thanks for posting the link. Yup, not much for accuracy until you get into the big stuff .. and even then .. not what I would call "accurate". I'm surprised they didn't try just plain old slugs instead of that fancy stuff? I suppose because they were talking home defense.
