Got myself a 1895SBL for predator defence. Essentially I'm looking to stockpile a few rounds and want to know what is most versitile for bears, cats, wolf, hog... rabbid donkeys?

I have a box of hsm bear load 45-70 +p for predator defense purposes only. I believe there 430 grain flat points at 1800 fps. I'd feel confident with these rounds. Plus you get the starline brass out of them.

Saw those at my LGS. Didn't buy because they were cast... mainly because they were the most expense.

I bought Hornady Leverlution and Remington Express for range fodder.

Hand loading and 45-70 were made for each other. The hornady leverevolution brass is slightly shorter than standard brass and is a pain to reload unless you have custom flaring and crimping dies. I feel a nice cast pill around 400gr will end anything within 100 yards. (1500fps).Beyond that, any of the jacketed factory offerings are probably gtg.

45/70 is a different beast , heavy and slow gets better penetration than light ( for caliber) and faster .458 WINMAG and that is simply amazing when you think about it. It dosnt need speed it needs mass which works perfectly as cast bullets lead up at speed.

Man... now I have to get into casting. Lol
Not as hard as it seems. The toughest part is securing enough raw materials. The equipment is cheap and simple. 405gr lee bullet over 14gr of unique powder produces 1200fps. It hits a steel gong HARD at 100. You can plink with it all day. Getting to 1500fps can be done easily with several rifle powders. It's a pretty fun/cheap combo for sure!

When I got going I found it was actually cheaper to buy components rather than loaded rounds (normally loaded rounds are cheaper the first time round). I have 2 loads, one for plinking at the range 13 grs of trailboss with a 405 cast bullet from bullet barn which are a dream to shoot. Accurate and can shoot them all day. The other is a 350 gr Hornady fp with 54 grs. Varget (that's the low end, 60grs. is the max listed) which is no fun at all to shoot in a tee shirt

Seems to me that 405 grn bullet/14 grains Unique combo is my plinker load too. I think a step above was about 18 grains BlueDot to get around 1,380 fps, or use either version of 4198 to walk up from there. I would use the Unique load for deer hunting 100 m or less in a heartbeat.

That's west of here. Springside, Theodore, Sheho, Jedburgh, Ituna... etc. The north: Canora, Kamsak, Invermy, Rama... etc are known more for its pedaheh... and garlic abusers.

Sure used to be some great three day wedding parties a bit west and north, like Kylemore!

As several here have stated,,heavy, and cast bullets, handloads,,,the 45/70 has been proven to out penetrate the 458, the Lott, and the viscious 460,,,slow and hardcast is the ticket,,I load 420gr hardcast at 1985 fps,,kill anything on earth,,,RJ, was my inspiration on this rifle,,his loads and his bullets,,thanks again Jim

Back in the inception of the 45-70 cartridge, they had no problem killing buffalo at 1500 fps using 405gr cast trapdoor loads. Old tales of the bullet entering the chest and exiting the a$$ still circulate.

I mostly shoot cast dropped from the Lyman #459193... but also like the Hornady 325 FTX for deer.
