45-70 Guberment

If you're using it for defense I'd see if letting the hammer down and recocking ends with just a click and no bang. That's what I found with my 1895.

never heard that is it defective?

Not sure if it's supposed to work like that, but the barrel is also canted so the quality control on mine isn't so good

Looks like I'm not the only one with that problem

Dude,,Id have that looked at by a competent gunsmith,,or ship it back to Marlin through a gun shop,,I have a newer Remington made model,,everyone says they are junk but mine works great,,I spent some time working the action to smooth it out and it performs flawlessly

What bullet gain would you use for predetor defence? Because that's the only reason I bought this thing.

Check out hard cast .458/480 gr WFNs. This bullet over your choice of W-748, H-335, IMR 3031 or something similar should give you velocity in the range of 1800 fps from a short barrel. I get 2250 in my 21" .458 with them. This style of bullet, which has a short nose section so it cycles easily through a lever action, is available up to 550 grs, but the 550's velocity would be low enough in the .45/70 that I doubt it would have any advantage over a 480 unless you just enjoy recoil.

PM me if you'd like to try a few 480s, and I'll send you a sampling.

I would get that looked at. Might be a cross-bolt safety issue... that brings up a question.

Is there a cross bolt safety removal kit? I've never had a lever with one and it seems to be a hinderece. Like a SxS auto safety.

I have being shooting my 95 g JM rifle since 2000 and NEVER had a cross bolt safety problem - I think just leave it alone ! jmo RJ

With cast bullets from 420 grains and up, I have used H4198 allot. There are so many powders that work well with this caliber! My Browning BPCR can ring the 4" gong out to 400 yards no problem! I am hoping to get better optics for the rifle so I can get more vertical adjustment to go to 7-800 yards +. So much fun to shoot!

My 1985 Remlin gets fed with 405gr Remington JSP on top of 44.5grs IMR4198.For speed and ballistics, it turns the 45/70 into a .450Marlin
