45/70 in Non-Lever Guns?

I keep thinking about buying a 45/70 for lobbing huge chunks of lead around, but I am not really a lever gun fan. Are there any other options in a repeater action? I have seen a few Enfield conversions, but I would prefer a factory rifle if possible. If not, any info on the Enfield conversion and who does it would be most appreciated.

Baikal makes a double barrel in this chambering called the MP221. Check out thier website.

Edit** Just noticed that you were looking for a repeater. My bad

There are some double rifles in .45-70.
Don't think any of the Gibbs bubba'd Lee-Enfields, with a proprietary mag, made it up here. Wouldn't put any money on it though. Some guys have done their own conversion. You'd have to find a barrel.
Some Mausers were converted for Siam(Thailand), long ago, too. Haven't ever seen one, in person, myself.

There've been a few of the gibbs 45-70 enfields on the EE in the past while. They seem to be well built.

The NEF Handi Rifle has caught my eye on occasion too, and it's pretty affordable.

On the higher end there are lots of rolling blocks of modern construction that're in 45-70.

Edit - woops, repeater action... my bad.

I have seen 3 sell on the EE. The first one I liked the look of, but had no desire for one yet. The second I didn't like the work that was done, the third I had no cash on hand and it sold in a day.

If I had a solid lead on a gunsmith doing the conversions I would buy a beater Enfield and start on the conversion, but no luck so far.

No other bolt guns in 45/70?

Was there not some sort of Siamese mauser conversion.
I am not in the know on this but I thought I read something on it once
May be some one more knowledeable will chime in on this

Personally I'd love to own a Ruger #1 in .45-70 to go with a couple other #1s that I own. However, it is operated by an underlever and it is a single shot.

But, if you're not totally averse to a single shot with a lever (yeah I did read the original post), the Ruger #1 is:

- compact (very short action)
- reliable
- brutally strong
- well balanced
- totally classy

Get a Ruger #1S .45/70, you will be cooler than everyone else!

IMHO the siamese mauser conversions are the best option. They are built on the 'improved' 98 action can't get any stronger.

There are the Sharps copies and the Highwall and rolling block copies but if you don't like the retro guns, or the lever guns, maybe the next best thing is the TC Encore with 45/70 barrel attached, some of these 45/70 bls. are down to 16" I think.

You could use a reduced load in a 458 Winchester.

I used to load 68 grains of IMR 4350 over 405 gr for 1650fps.

You can also run cast bullets in a 458.
300 grain cast over 18grs of Unique for 1400fps.
500 grain cast over the same load was good for 1200fps.

Then you can crank it up with 400 grain Barnes and have a real stopping rifle. ;)

Believe me, I have considered it.

im sure it wouldnt be too hard to convert a P-14 .303 british to 45-70, being as they are mauser style bolt guns already chambered in a rimmed cartridge...

Stop considering and go for it.!:D

Most guys that buy a 458 get in way over their heads and end up selling it cheap....Which is good for you!
Take it easy with the load and it can be a trapdoor, Marlin, Ruger #1, and an elephant smasher all in one.

Good luck bubba!:D

I know you are looking for a bolt action but I would also say look at a single shot...

I have a 22" stainless steel bull barrel in 45-70 for my T/C Contender carbine and it is loads of fun to shoot.

I'm loading Hornady 325gr FTX @ 1950fps and I don't need to worry about going to a shorter case length like I have to when I load them for my Marlin...

I can hit the gong @ 200 yards every shot with this combo (ok when I do my part)...

I would also recommend looking at a T/C Encore can load them up a lot hotter than a Contender... :)
