45 70 lead bullets

Can someone tell me where to buy lead bullets for 45 70 which is 458 th. or is it better to use jacketed. this is my first 45 70 im presently using 300 gr. hrnd. mainly punching paper this time of year. thanks
 
Where are you located. We have a person locally who casts bullets but shipping may hurt.

As others have said, find a supply of wheel weights or scrap lead and start casting.

The 45-70 works extremely well with cast bullets, they perform at least as well as jacketed, often better. Properly sized with good lube they don't lead much and you will get more velocity out of heavy cast bullets than the same weight jacketed. You can also load down to pop gun levels with cast bullets for lots of light recoil, low cost range fun.

The best choice for cast bullets I have found is Ben Hunchak on this forum. Ben's prices are much better than any others I have found and the quality and service are excellent. Ben is extremely knowledgable and has forgotten more about cast bullet use than most of us ever know. Sadly for you, Ben takes winters off and heads south, so you can't get bullets from him until spring.

My next try would be Bullet Barn, their prices are significantly higher than Ben, but the bullets I have used from them have also been very good quality and they have a pretty extensive selection to choose from. As noted, you want your bullets sized at least 0.001" bigger than jacketed and 0.002" wouldn't be amiss for 45-70 use, especially for heavier loads.
