I have am 1881 Springfield in 45-70 that I shoot and reload for. While at the range today I fired 20 shots and was getting my regular target when all of a sudden the shots started key holing 6 shots later I quit. Now i cast my bullets 405 grn sized to .458 and lubed ,I use 13 grns of Trail boss i do not use a card on top of the powder .All as I usually do but what the hell happend. The barrel wasnt even warm. There is definatly lead fowling in the bore and I am gettin rid of that now but what can I do to not have this happen again.Any one had this problem.

My guess is that they are too hard and/or too small, if you slug your bore, you will prolly find it .460"+, and bullets should be 30-1 Lead/tin....IMHO

The bore slugs .455 and the bullets are fairly soft.Has any one tried trail boss with cornmeal filler (scrubber) Or would a card on top of the powder stop the bullet from melting slightly and cause the lead build up.This is something that has never happend before in 400 shots.Graham

i use allot of trail boss in my 45-70 with 405 grain TLG and 415 grain TLG, never used any filler.
i use 12 to 13.5 grains with very good results, no keyholing.
i use straight WW lead and im sized to .460

Is the bore a consistent .455 or is there a portion that is larger? Slugging will give you the minimum diameter. Try putting the sized slug through a second time and see if the resistance is consistent down the entire barrel.

For 45.70 I use the round insulation you can buy at Canadian tire. It is for door seals and the 1/2 works perfect. You buy it in a roll and cut off as much as you need.
