45/70 loads

55O grain "hard" cast bullets at over 1800 are more then adequate for any continent. Shoot them well and I can't imagine there is a thinking hunter out there who would'nt be happy to have you along for griz, buffalo or elephant.

Thanks for the load info guys.

OK. Email any outfitter, tell him the last two species, tell him the gun then put the response you get in the reply box below. I'm dying to hear it.....In short dont talk about places and species you've only had your momma read to you as nursery rymes........

Actually no one wants to continue posting because you are not listening to anyone that has experience with the heavy 45-70 loads.

It's just a waste of our time....... :D :D :D

I like the 45-70. I own one, and plan to own more. But I don't try to delude myself that it's an adequate and suitable african DG cartridge, because it just isn't. I've used HEAVY loads in it. Heavier than possible in a '95 lever. And I've used african DG cartridges, like a 458, 416 and 460. There is a difference, and it's not a small one. 45-70 on moose, bear, elk, bison, etc - sure. Elephant and Cape buff? My life is worth enough to me to ensure that if I ever do go after these guys, it'll be with a 458 at minimum or a 470 or better. And I'll have a PH backing me up. Just because something CAN be done, or HAS been done doesn't mean it's a good idea. Hell, people have hunted elephant for centuries with spears and arrows. It can be done. Would I do it? Hell no.

Who cares, no one asked you  Not doing it is your choice.

Buy a rocket launcher and go hunting ;) ;)

Why does everyone around here think you need the cannon off of a aircraft carrier to go hunting anything bigger than a deer? Maybe learn how to shoot, that might help overcome that need for a nuclear weapon to drop an animal.

You were posting just for me? I'm flattered. I've owned several 45/70's with med and heavy lodings and have been to the continent in question. Can you say the later. I doubt it and if you have(I emphasize IF) you werent doing the mentioned DG hunts with a 45/70. So how bout you listen up to reality. Without having been there or knowing the rules your dealing in fantasy.

Right, because it's not like Garrett is trying to sell you something, or anything like that.

Just because something CAN be done, doesn't mean its not a bad idea.

I don't quote this article (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_8_50/ai_n6081535) and tell you that a 7mm08 is a great elephant cartridge because K.B. killed 1,000 elephants with his 7x57

Or this one (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BTT/is_167_28/ai_110457317) and say that hunting elephant with a 500s&w handgun isn't a stunt

Africa DG's and the 45/70 go hand in hand

Nice comeback

I never said it was the best choice in cartriges for DG in Africa. But I would use one if the opportunity came about.

If DG started charging or chasing me I would just hop over the fence and wave from the other side ;) :D

Thats what Africa hunting is these days, controlled/ sell you something circumstances. It is no longer what it used to be.

Nope. But the guy I shoot with twice a week was and so was one of my family members. Allthough niether of them used a 45-70, niether of them needed a bazooka either.

I have never had the urge to hunt over seas, but many of my very close friends and family members have. I would much rather spend my money on our continent.

:)

If a 458 is a minimum DG cartridge then is'nt all with the heavy 45-70 loads being disscussed?
This is a long way from advocating 6.5 and 7mms on elephant. Or varmint calibres on Zebra.
45-70 factory loads on Dangerous beasts, yep huge mistake. Wring it till it hurts handloads using proper bullets whole other beast.

This thread has run its course, it has ceased to be constructive, in fact, it is now full of errors, and omissions, it took a turn for the worst when someone slagged the 45/70,they can't be forgiven!!

Its not only fps,its fps with a solid as opposed to cast. Its case design. And as one other fella mentioned. I for one would never ditch the 45/70 theres one at my side religiously every fall. but never in africa on DG save only as laughing stock
